Iams dry cat food in the 22 or 25 lb bag for hairball control (it's the best!) - BUY IT AT WALMART - No, I don't work for Walmart - but their pet food is the cheepest! My cats were healthy and lean and never puked on the floor...try it!

For wet food - use Friskies - cats love it and it is cheep and good.

Ok so that is really expensive, there is a middle ground between really expensive and really cheap. You don't want to go really cheap, and though Iams isn't cheap it isn't good for your cat really. I found Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul that seems to be made really well and it is not overly expensive. I think the 18 pound bag (which should last a really really long time) was $20. I am not sure on the calorie content but this food is made with real meats and as cats are carnivores it is good for them. Below are links to a list of good and bad cat food brands and also the chicken soup site which has a list of dealers if you are interested. You can see if there is a dealer near you. Hope this was helpful

Hills and Science Diet (same manufacturer) are not good foods. The way to take weight off your cats is to eliminate any corn from their diet. I'm pretty sure Hills and SD have corn in them.

There are premium foods (not as expensive as what you are using) that use brown rice, rice, pea etc. as fillers. Most of these foods have a higher protein content than other cat foods. Cats were meant to eat high protein foods. Their natural diet is raw meat and bone, some fat.

This is like a Catkins diet. High protein, low carbohydrate. Probably better for cats in the long run than it is for humans.
You will find these foods in small, owner-operated pet stores.

CA Natural -- chicken and rice
Natural Balance -- venison and pea
Natural Balance -- chicken and rice
Wellness (my cats don't like this anymore)
Nature's Variety - Prairie

If you click under my name you will find a "recipe" for switching from one dry food to another. Do follow that procedure.

Your cats are on the special diet food for A REASON. Your vet prescribed it for a GOOD REASON.

If you love your cats you will continue with the diet prescribed by your vet.

Precise and Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance have lower calorie foods. You could check them out. My cats eat those brands. I give them dry food most of the time, and every couple of days they get a can. I have three, and none of them are overweight. (Two are four years old and the third is fifteen)

Try Petco or Petsmart or another big box pet supply store in your area. You might find a lower price.

Petco.com sells Natural Balance Reduced Calorie cat food.
A 16.5 lb bag sells for $28.99

Do not skimp and buy grocery store food. Grocery store bought pet food is full of fillers and rejected meat and meat by-products.
Use cat food made from HUMAN GRADE ingredients.

Listen to Martha Norwalk's Animal World on the internet on Sundays 9 to noon Pacific time and she'll tell you why paying more for premium foods is healthier for your cats! www.marthanorwalk.com

i use science diet for my two cats. i think they are the same people who make hills..but anyways it's about 30 bucks for a 20lb bag and they make a light as well but i'm not sure about the cal/cup you should check into that. i don't recommend buying anything cheaper then that because most of the cheaper stuff is bad for your cats and that's how they get to be the way they are.

That is really, REALLY expensive. I have a cat with a "weak" tummy and she eats Iams. It took several fancy brands before I discovered how great Iams worked for her. I highly recommend it. Plus, she is ten years old and my other cat is only 1. They both eat it and no problems. But, be fore warned, changing a pets diet does take time. You can't just switch them. If you have a bag of expensive stuff, blend it with the Iams changing the porportions gradually. It makes a huge difference.

IAMS weight control formula has worked really well for my overweight cat, and at wal-mart only costs $15 for an 8 lb bag. you dont want to go too cheap or your cats will start having other medical problems.

I'm not sure about the calories, but look at Nutro's cat food. I feed it to my dogs (Nutro, not the cat food, lol) and my aunt feeds it to her cats. The majority of them like it but she has 1 or 2 that don't like it so she still feeds those two the old food she was feeding them before. They have a frequent buyers program as well.
