Well if you are clinically depressed as I am, you really need to take the prescriptions. The reason is that you really don't know what dosage you are getting no matter what the label says. I've tried several herbal remedies and ended up in worse condition and even suicidal. There are a few new drugs out there like lexapro and welbutrin that have been made to have fewer side effects. Please talk to your doctor and think carefully before you use anything over the counter. I also say that before taking any prescription you need to research and weigh the benefits vs the cons. good luck I've been depressed for about twenty years now and I have Bi Polar too which doesn't help any. It wasn't until two years ago that I finally found a drug cocktail that gives me minimal side effects and makes me feel like I want to do everything I never had the energy or need to do before. I'm still a crazy b***h, but I'm great and fun to hang around with now. grin. btw I'm only 32

Yes I would have to say that I had good results when I was taking it. I was on it about 8 years ago. I was going through some hard times and had become very depressed and money being the problem I could not afford a co pay to go to the doctor knowing that they would give me a prescription that I would not be able to afford. My mom gave me a bottle of St Johns wort. I did not instantly notice anything at first but over a short time I felt my mood lift a little. I mostly noticed that things did not bother me as much as they were before I started taking it. My best friend died during this time and I was able to handle it without being a basket case. I did grieve but I held myself together a little better. I know that each person is different but I have good results from the herb

I have. I started taking it, and within about 3-4 weeks I wasn't as heavy/lethargic thinking through everything I had to do.... I just did it. I saw a report about it on 60 minnutes (in 1997) -- bought books to read up on it, and started taking 900 milligrams a day (3 pills a day -- they are 300 milligrams each).

It takes about 6 weeks to really kick in. If the person who is taking it is female, side affects can be heavy periods -- and also, more importantly, it over/quickly metabolizes some drugs such as blood thinners, birth control pills, among others -- so make sure the doctor knows the patient is thinking about taking it. (I have a 6 yr old son who was conceived because of the overmetabolizing of my BCPs *smile*)

A person cannot be on other depression medications. Big no, no. I started my own treatment, but whenever I saw a doctor I told them I was on it -- they asked how it was going, never tried to talk me off to use other drugs. I wasn't clinically depressed, though, I just fluctuated in mood a lot (and had ever since I was a teenager). When I went on it, that all STOPPED. I stopped taking it when I was pregnant, and I nursed for 2 years, and didn't take it then, and have since tried to wean myself off of it, but will sometimes take it for several months if stress gets particularly bad.... and I've had a bunch of stress in the last few years....

Here's a great website with information/reports -- I *do* get my St. John's Wort from them, but you can just as easily get it over the counter -- I just wanted to make sure that I was getting the same dose in each pill, which is why I decided to use them. Overthecounter is now much cheaper.

If you are on ANY medications at all, consult with a doctor first. Otherwise, read up on it, and try it out, if you like what you read.

Good luck.

Over the last five years I had begun to have increasingly withdraw into a downward spiral of depression..

But now with the method I can fully focus my energy and thoughts into a decisive line on how to make my life better constantly. And it works like magic! I'm beginning to attract people to me once again and things have just been looking up since then.

Helping you eliminate depression?

St. John's Wort can help light depression as in someone just having the blues. It does not work on bi-polar depression or depression which involves serious complications such as thoughts of suicide. I have a sister who takes it when she is feeling down. But, she does not have serious depression.

I've taken it and I know other people who have also. The effects are minimal, it is definitely not going to reverse your depression by any stretch. But I did find I was slightly less irritable and it was easier to focus on work instead of sitting around worrying.

i have had friends who have tried this for mild or minor depression and it has an effect, but studies have shown it is a placebo effect, not directly related to the properties of the herb.

depression is brought on by several different factors and does not happen without a causative issue, ie, physical, trauma to the head or situational.

Plenty of people have benefited from it, but I think a lot of it depends on your homones, and cause of depression. Try it. If it works, great. If not, there's lots of other stuff out there to try. If none of them work, get something from the doctor. Good luck.

i tried using it for my chronic depression and it did help a little but lost its effectiveness rapidly, withing like 6 weeks, have you tried researching the use of omega3 fish oil?? that had a dramatic effect on my depression and hasn't lost effectiveness over time and its also good for heart health and cholesterol lowering.
