I have a black Lab, she is about 9 months old. we just moved into an apartment and she is a little big for the place. She won't stay out back where she has a 30 ft stake out cord. the neighbors already complained about her barking, thats the problem. We were going to try to bring her back slowly and work on barking. we tried a mussel but she scratches her nose raw. But the maintenence man said he wanted her, that he had a big back yard for her to run in and he has a couple of kids for her to play with and he has other dogs. We want to keep her because we love her, and we'll have to work on potty training her but what would be best for her. We want her to be happy and not be cramped. Which would be better? Thank you

Raising a dog is always harder than getting a dog. Try the obedience and home training, but try and make your final choice quick, the longer you wait the more complicated this could become. Remember typically Labs calm down a lot as they grow up, the actual age this happens, I am not sure. If you do go with the maintenance man, check out what the living situation will be, you can never be to careful....good luck :)

I have an 8 1/2 mth old black lab. We got him at 12 weeks old, and within a couple weeks he was potty trained. The fact that yours is not says to me that you have not spent the proper time training your dog. We recently moved from a very large house to an apartment w/ a yard barely large enough for him to lay down in. He hasn't had any trouble at all making the adjustment, because we take him on several walks a day. He is very content just hanging out w/ us throughout the day. Barking?? Never! He is never left outside long enough to have the desire to bark, and if he is, he is happily entertained w/ a ham bone. If your dog is barking it is because she is BORED, and doesn't want to be alone. DOGS ARE NOT MEANT TO STAY OUTSIDE!!! Why do people get dogs only to chain them up??!

One poster suggested spraying her mouth w/ something sour.... R U CRAZY???!!! That's surely a trainer I'd stay away from!

Labs are a GREAT family dog, provided you allow her to be a part of the family. But if all you plan to do is leave her chained outside w/ a muzzle on.... GIVE HER TO SOMEONE WHO WILL PROVIDE THE PROPER LOVE AND ATTENTION SHE DESERVES.

Lastly. you should take more care when making a decision to bring a dog into your family! At 9-mths old you are already talking of giving her away?? You obviously didn't take into consideration that she will be a part of your family for 14 years or more.

Call the breeder. If they are at all reputable, they will not allow you to give the dog away w/o their screening the new owner. More often than not, they will request that you return the Lab to them, and they will properly train the dog while searching for a suitable home.

I have a 6 month old black lab. And I also live in an apartment. My pup gets alot of my time. The signs of regression and barking. You should first check out the maintanence man yard and such and see how the dog reacts. It could very well be the best thing for yours. I know what you are feeling. I wanted to give mine to the man across the street from me for just the place to run and chase rabbits. But I couldn't do it.

you could keep her in the house but you would have to take her out for at least 40min minute walks twice a day so she will be to tired to cause trouble. and if you are going to relax and lets say read a book then I would take her out on the stake, and every time she barks say 'quite' or your choice of words. If she listens give her a treat with lots of praise. If she doesn't then spray her in the mouth with something that tastes bitter or sour. She'll get the point soon.

My parents got a Black Lab and he is a TOTAL NUT and he is 1 1/2 years old. He's been so hyper since he was a puppy and he's VERY BIG NOW. Your pup still has a lot of growing and calming down to do. It sounds like you should give him to the man and get something smaller.

I have a yellow lab that's 9 years old now. When she was a puppy is hated being outside by herself, but she was a bad girl if left alone in the house. We went to putting her in a kennel when we where gone. She really liked it and felt safe. You might put her in puppy classes to help too. They helped a lot with ours. If you want to keep her, your going to have to work with her. Do you walk her at least 45 minutes a day. That helps a lot. Shes not so bored and she's tired. Good luck.

Please give this dog to the man who wants her and has the room for her. One of the fastest ways to ruin a dog's temperament is to keep them tied up. This dog is 9 months old and not even house trained. You put a muzzle on her that caused an open wound on her nose?

If you care about this dog at all you'll give her up the sooner the better.

Take her to a dog trainer for her barking and take her on lots of walks to tire her out, if she's happy where she is you'll know it. I would try my suggestion first and then see how she acts. But overall it's your choice to make. Don't try the muzzel again and try to make you disision on if he's a good man or not. If you choose to give her up, then make sure that she is with someone you know you can trust.

Let her go live in a big backyard. Being on a stake and muzzled is no fun for a dog.

Give her up and get an animal more suited to your living arrangements.
