I always like to play the flute. Everytime I play for a competition, or try out for something, I always get nervous. Like when I play the flute in a competition and I get nervous, I always play really fast and sloppy with the notes. And when I try out for stuff--like last year I tried out for Flag Cor. for my school's marching band, I got so nervous and dropped the flag. What can I do to overcome my nervousness??

I know what you mean!
Just do all the stuff that people put on here.

Take deep breaths, and really FOCUS...

When you are practicing, pretend it is the real
thing.

Get your friends and relatives to WATCH you.

When you are in front of a big audience, pretend they are all naked!

Pick one person out and concentrate on them.

Remember to smile (unless you are playing the flute) but you can smile with your eyes.

Practice until you can play your songs or do what ever it is to perfection, so that you will not be afraid that you are going to make a mistake.

If you are confident you will be able to be friendly toward your audience.

Remember, when it is all over they are going to applaud you!!

Some nervous tension can be a good thing. Trust me there are very few people who are not nervous performing or giving a speech. That includes people who have been doing it for a long time. You've received some good answers here.
Practice Practice practice and practice in front of friends and family so you get used to being in front of an audience.

Every performer on stage in the past present and future will feel nervousness before a performance .Only those performers who manage to convert the nervousness into courage of performance have and will succed to be world class performers and revered and venerated by the world.

Performance anxiety is the reason why rock stars or stage actors have little rituals before they take the stage. Robbie Williams (lead singer for FEEL) kisses pictures before going on stage. Maybe you should create your own signature ritual before you perform. Some people meditate, or recite a mantra or poem dedicated to their performance. Some people pray. Some people surround themselves with loved ones up to the moment that they take the stage.

Find your ritual and channel your nervous energy into it.

I used to perform on stage when I was a lad, and I used to to two main things to get over the nervousness. Know you are going to do your best and no one is expecting anything more. One, concentrate on the maestro, director, teacher, leader, what ever and TRY to forget there are people in the seats watching you. Two, preparation. If you know you are prepared going on stage, your confidence will be at its height and nervousness tends to go away.

Take a deep breath or two before you begin. It might help.

Also - you're not alone. We all get nervous.

Good luck.
