Sometimes I have to turn on the television to fall asleep. I can't sleep in silence.

In this case, it sounds like a developed habit over time, where the sound of the television is comforting, relaxing and sleep-inducing. However, television causes your brain to respond with different brain waves, ones in which relaxation is inevitable. However, if you are sensitive enough to be affected by the electrostatic emissions of the unit, then that would also be a contributor.

TV provides company, and background noise, that soothes some peoples minds.
People can fall asleep to all kinds of sounds:
Crickets, rain, a fan blowing, just something with a constant hum.
You were probably sung to as a child, or use to hearing family members voices when you were a child being put the bed.
Your not alone millions of ppl fall asleep to the TV.
Im the total opposite.
Can't sleep with a TV on.

It's because of your personality. I am the same way. I don't like silence. I am someone who likes to be around others, and to have others around me. I love commotion, and I don't like being alone. The night makes me feel like I am being blocked out, left alone. When I turn on music or the television, it makes me feel like I am back in the world.

However, it is unhealthy to fall asleep with the music on or the television on. Your brain has to rest, and if you have something on, your brain is focusing on that sound, and it gets tired. Then, in the morning, you wake up exhausted.

There could be several reasons. One is that you just get tired. Alot of people sit down to watch a program and fall asleep right before it is over. Some people need some kind of noise. It helps drown out the noise of the night. (Like trains, cars, creeking of the house, people talking outside, ect.) It gives you the feeling of not being alone. It's just like a baby with it's blanket. A comfort thing. It's also used as a night light. It's not bright but just enough light to feel safe. I know it helps me that way. It drowns out the nightly noises for me and it gives me enough light to feel comfortable. I hope this helps.

TV helps you fall a sleep because your eyes get tired of watching it causing you to get tired and fall a sleep.

I am the same way...I think it could just be a sleeping pattern habit.. My kids used to wake me up to and I would tell them to leave me alone else I would be waking them up at 4 or 5 o`clock in the morning....

I go through phases like that. I'm just coming out of one. Set the sleep timer if you have one. You don't dream properly if the noise goes all night.
