Well, I don't know if it's the cheapest, but it is effective. I have a dog with a severe flea allergy, so I HAVE to keep my home flea free. I buy flea killer carpet powder- follow the directions. I also strip all my bedding and wash in hot water if possible; I then put the flea powder on my mattresses and living room furniture too. You can vacuum it from your mattresses and furniture when you vacuum the floor. I also mop all non-carpeted areas the same day with any cleaner, just use hot water and a dash of bleach. I do this about once a week. I also have 2 cats and a ferrett. I use Advantage on all my animals. That CAN get expensive; but, for me at least, is necessary. Also, putting a flea color in your vacuum bag can help prevent flea reinfestation if you don't use flea carpet powder.

Vacuum your carpet thouroughly and discard the bag right away. Then sprinkle baking soda all over your carpet. Flea eggs remaing in carpet will hatch in a day or two because of the vibrations made by your vacuum cleaner. The flea larvae will eat the tiny particles of baking soda thinking they are adult flea debris (which they feed on). The baking soda will kill them of course. Do this routine regularly like twice a week. But for best results, treat your pet with a good flea killer like Advantage first. If you treat the carpet and the animal there is every chance that your flea problem will go 'bye-bye' within a month. Good luck!

This just captures and kills them by drowning -- you may have to do it again if you don't use chemicals too, on the next life cycle....(they lay LOTS of eggs...)
shallow pan (like a pie pan) -- fill it with soapy water (Dawn works great) -- bubbles are ok -- they will pop and the soapy water will still work
Place pie pan in an "infested" area and put a bright light (like a desk lamp that you can move the light) over the water.
The fleas jump into the water and sink instantly. If they float on top, there isn't enough soap.
vacuum a lot, and if you can't get rid of the bag right away, put a flea collar (pulled an activated) in the bag before you vacuum.
good luck

Borax laundry soap flakes. Non toxic. Sweep them into the carpet and then don't vaccuum for a couple of weeks. It dries out the eggs and larvae. Use advantage or frontline on the pet to kill the adult fleas, and this will speed up the process greatly.

Boric acid-found in the drug store or pharmacy section
Sprinkle a little bit behind furniture or where you have fleas-also works on roaches and ants
Spray the yard with a mix of 1/2 cup hot sauce &1 cup listareine, that has had some tobaco soaked in it then strained. Add some citronella oil(not lamp oil) if you have it.
Use a hose sprayer or mix with 2 gal of water in a tank sprayer

As long as the pet that has them has a flea repellant, they will all die in time. Just vaccuume.
Also, I lived on the beach and had sand fleas. They didn't die, and we had no pets. We fogged the house every 3 months or so.
