5) cockatiel diet - are fruit and vegetables necessary ?
A cockatiel diet must be supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. An all seed diet often results in an unhealthy or overweight cockatiel.
Try the following:
FRUIT:
apple, grape, guava, kiwi fruit, mango, melon, nectarine, orange, peach, pear, pomegranate, plum, strawberry, tangerine, watermelon
VEGETABLES:
bok choy, broccoli, carrot (chopped or grated), celery, chard, lettuce (but small amounts of lettuce and not too often as not a lot of goodness), peas, silverbeet, spinach, sweetcorn, watercress, zucchini.
Favorites with cockatiels tend to be apple, egg, pasta, peas, rice, silverbeet, spinach, sweetcorn.
Note that the fruit and vegetables should be provided:
thoroughly washed
in small pieces
at room temperature
unpeeled
free of cores, stones, pits or pips
raw (some cockatiels prefer certain vegetables cooked eg peas and
sweetcorn - use your judgment here)
fresh (obviously this will be the most nutritious for your cockatiel but
you can use frozen or canned)
Be aware that your cockatiel's droppings may be runnier than usual with an intake of fruit and vegetables.
Some cockatiels will not take to fruit and vegetables straight away. Persevere as it can take up to a year before your cockatiel will eat them. Fruit and vegetables are an essential part of your cockatiel's diet so offer them washed and fresh each day - do not give up!

Your bird is hungry! If he is eating that much and is not fat, It might be because he is not getting all the nutrition he needs from the seed you are using. Put multiple dishes in the cage so the budgie can eat too. Many times budgies and tiels can be aggressive with each other, so they may prevent the other from eating. A separate cage might be needed. A good pellet, such as Zupreem or Harrison's are necessary to have a healthy bird. Offer these in a separate food cup. Also, greens and other vegies are very important to both birds. An all seed diet is too rich in fat for a cockatiels and budgies. You need to go to the pet store and buy a good quality pellet food. Start by mixing a small amount of pellets in the with the seed each day. Every day increase the amount of pellets and decrease the amount of seed until you can see that your birds are eating enough pellets and then use the seed as a treat only. Be sure to feed your birds plenty of fresh fruits and veggies every day. Feed you birds in the morning and again in the evening if the food dish is empty but be sure they have plenty of toys in their cage to play with and toys they can chew on to keep them occupied so they think about things other than eating.

seperate the two birds.
then give the 'tiel only one small bowl of food a day. when he eats it all, don't give him any more, just water.
feed the parakeet all he wants in a different cage.
