Dear eric: It is not wrong to question this, at all. Everyone thinks upon it at some points - but we haven't any answer.
The main problem, I think, is that the human mind has no ability to take in the Concept that would be revealed to us. For instance, human minds have difficulty "picturing" physical earthly spaces without seeing a horizon line or some border to the picture. Yet we can picture endless space without a horizon.
In this same vein, we can be told what caused God - but then the human mind wants to know what caused THAT that caused God to be? Once that is understood, we want to know what caused That that was THAT which caused God. And, so on. You see the problem? The mind will still question what created what - endlessly.
Jesus says things like, " . . .[God] is complete where He begins, and where there is no end." This means God is Alpha and Omega.
Jesus also says, : "The ego [human mind] demands many answers. . ." And, " The ego may ask, 'How did the impossible occur?' " (This speaks of all things involving God's Own Creation, Himself - as well as facts about a Perfect Creation seemingly being less than Perfect). Jesus, to these questions says, " . . .there is no answer ; only an experience of God [for you ] and,. . . seek only this." (The experience of Him.)
As for what God is: He is Spirit-Mind. His Spirit-Mind exists in a body of essence that fills all space and dimension. His Mind has a Force or Power that causes His Thoughts to come into being.
We are a Thought He has had and desired. Creation is the manifestation of His Thought or thinking. We do not know how long the Creator was an existent Spirit-Mind before He desired to Create His Beloved "Kingdom," which is US. He yearned to express Himself to - and share His Thoughts with - His Own Likeness. He needed to share His Love with something. Express Himself to something. He Created us as more of Himself , for Himself is all He Knew that would be Perfect. We are truly Spirit-mind also. We are OF Him, but not Him. This is our Reality that Jesus demonstrated in the Resurrection.
I am sorry, this is all I can offer. I hope it suffices to know that the experience of God is all you will ever need - once you have had that experience.

What was he? huh?
Genesis 1:1-5 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light 'day', and the darkness he called 'night.' And there was evening, and there was morning - the first day."
He was probably in the bathroom reading up on how to make all this stuff.

God, the living God, just IS. He is the alpha and the omega. The beginning and the end. If you are at the beginning of the line, who is in front of you? No one. It's really not important where He was before He created space, and man. Since man has been here, all we need to know is what is mentioned in the bible in the beginning. We need to know this, because man is here now. Someone breathed life into man, and we believe it is the living God.

Now this is an excellent question that many brilliant people have been trying to answer over the ages. Thomas Aquinas summed it up best. It is a matter of belief and there are things beyond our know or intellect. That does not mean we still do not ask the question. God is considered in a spiritual world and we are in a physical world (matter). We have no experience in the spiritual world beyond contemplation. In this respect we are all men in Plato's cave.

we cant know everything we are mere humans but the bible those say he is the begining and the end. but i think he meant the begining and th eend of our universe. he doesnt resided in our universe thats how he can see past present and future at the sam etime.since motion is the origin of time and all universe is moving but to us that live in it see it in a linear fashion but god that resides out of it can see everything as a whole but i guess the origins of god is somehting ull have to ask him, what i think that is since we are to live with him in eternity then maybe maybe in eternity can go backwards and there is no begining.an god would be eternal becuase if there were to be a begining to him then then he could not be all powerful. and if he is not all powerful then he is not god. sorry if i kinda went off its not an easy question to try to answer.

It is not wrong to question, this!
Two thoughts on this question, though!
One, being, God is IT! The Beginning and the Ending. Nothing before, and Nothing after. I guess, that's where Christianity originates their theory of the "ONE" God....
Two, being, prior to the popularity of Christianity, many people believed in 'many' gods.
As far as, wondering, there's nothing wrong with that, but, none of us will know the truth, until, we pass from beyond this place in time.

God is not bound by time.
God created time and space (the four dimensions), there is no before and after for God. These are just finite human concepts.
God is infinite.
God is what is left when you take everything away.
God is simply the only reality, God is the truth.
I hope that was helpful.
Peace!

It is never wrong to question things about God when you don't know, this is how you learn.
The Scriptures say that God has always been and will always be. He is eternal. He is Spirit and was here before anything else was, it's hard for us to imagine isn't it? He knows it is. Most things about Him are hard for our little pea brains to imagine, this is why we need such an incredible God to put up with us knuckleheads lol Always ask questions, it's healthy.

You know, I asked my father the same question. Not because I questioned the existence of God, I am a Christian an totally believe in him. My dad has studied the Bible for over 15 yrs. and he told me that in the Bible God says that he has only told us certain things, and that he has many secrets that he has not reveiled to us. My father basically said that I will find out the answer to that when I get to Heaven.
