The Panasonic Lumix FZ7 is one of the best cameras on the market in your price range. It has the largest optical zoom of any non-SLR camera (12x). It has a 2.5" LCD screen with a High-Angle mode that allows you to take pictures easily in crowds. It also has a simple mode for beginners and a full manual mode for more advanced users. Its video is superb. Even better, it comes with a lens adapter and lens hood to minimize glare.
I bought this camera a month ago and am very pleased with it. I can take closeup pictures of things from so far away. It is light and small for the amazing zoom you get. I would highly recommend this camera.

digital cameras are ok but the best picture is SLR cameras. Single Lens Reflex. the picture quality is great and you take what you see, there is no digital enhancements to your view unlike digital cameras and you dont get to see everybit of the texture and quality. Canon makes the best SLR cameras and lens. if you are thinking of a SLR camera, i recommend you start off with a easy-to-use camera---Canon Rebel XT, it has all you need and more, you can set everything and fool around with some gadgets too. that mini camera is amazing.
but since you are looking for a digital camera, i recommend this one: Sony Cyber-shot 6.0-Megapixel Digital Camera--Model: DSC-H2
or
Sony DSC-F505(i perfer this one though although it is a bit more on money

i used cnet to pick my first, and still my only, digital camera four years ago. not one problem with it in that time. i have a canon powershot s30. The software is really easy to use (I even trained my mom - lol). it takes great pix.

i suggest you get a camera with rechargeable batteries and get an extra battery and a larger memory disk.
If I were to get one today, in your price range, I would probably pick the Canon PowerShot SD450, which is what we bought for my mom last year. Its small and works great. 5 meg pix and still the easy to use canon software - just updated from the version i have.
