Spirits contain more alcohol by volume (ABV) than wine or beer.
Beer is typically 3% to 6%, although some very strong beers can reach 9% or higher.
Wine is usually 11% to 13.5%.
The ABV of spirits varies, but whisky, vodka etc are usually about 40%; some vodkas go up to 45% or even 50%.

Yes.
Beer and wine are fermented and therefore are only as high in alcohol as the recipe dictates...either by stopping the fermentation, or the yeast consumes all fermentable sugars, or the alcohol content kills the yeast (around 12-14% sometimes higher).
Spirits are essentially (not always *exactly*) beer or wine - generally called "wash") which is then distilled. This separates the alcohol from the rest of the liquids in the wash.. Different spirits have different methods of distillation for whichever final result is desired, but that's the short version :)

Yes.
Beer and wine are solely products of fermentation, and the yeast strains used for fermentation die at alcohol levels around 18%.
All other alcoholic beverages come from a two step process: fermentation, followed by distillation. Fermentation is always necessary to create the initial presence of alcohol. Distillation increases the percentage of alcohol thereafter, by removing other components from the beverage.
No matter what you used in the fermentation (barley, corn, potatoes, etc), distillation takes any raw material to a clear liquid, the more you distill, the closer you get to pure ethanol. Very little flavor actually remains from the original vegetative substance used to produce the alcohol. Thus a dark spirit like bourbon picks up its color and additional flavors after distillation, through methods like aging in oak barrels or adding flavors after distillation is completed.
As a side note, any plant material can be used for fermentation. All plant life contains sugars, and its these that the yeasts convert to alcohol, even in the wild.

Yes. The "proof" value is 2 times the alcohol content. 80 proof means it is 40% alcohol. Volume for volume vs. beer or wine, spirits have a lot more alcohol.
