It is expensive to breed dogs the right way.

Get in touch with your dogs' national breed club and become a member and get their newsletters. The breeders there will help you evaluate your dogs, give advice and mentor you along. They will make recommendations for you and you can also get newsletters from the club which have genetics and breeding information in it.

If you have never bred a litter before you should leave it to people who are more experienced. There is only so much you can learn from a book. If you are dead set on breeding a litter and are willing to put the life of your female on the line you should contact a breeder. They will be able to give you some good advice. I would also like to point out that millions of dogs die every year in shelters because too many people are breeding dogs. Think about it this way, if your dog has six puppies, six dogs in a shelter have do die just because you HAD to breed a litter. Do you really want to be responsible for the death of six dogs?

Why do you want to breed? What are your motives? Are your dogs AKC registered? Do they conform to standard? Do you belong to your breed club or are you active in showing? There are more than enough "companion" quality puppies and dogs in this world who are in need of quality loving homes. If you can't afford to pay too much for a "book" about breeding, then how can you possibly afford all that's involved with becoming a reputable and ethical breeder?

you can start with the AKC, American Kennel Club at www.akc.org

and it helps that your female is in heat. Dogs don't have sex like people do, the male needs a cue from the female and the female has to be ready. It's more than just a matter of putting them in a room together and hoping something happens.
