It is probably a little of both for you. Once you understand another language it does not seem so fast because you can make out the words. This may be part of it. There are also certain dialects even some Spanish speakers believe to be fast and some we consider slower. This may also be part of it. Good luck.

Yes, Spanish speakers speak faster than English speakers. It isn't just a perception. That is one of the neat things about the language. That is one of the things that my Spanish teacher in college was always trying to get us to do, get faster. In order to speak Spanish "like a native" you not only have to pronounce everything correctly, you have to speak it quickly and clearly. Spanish even has things in its grammar to make speaking quickly easier. Like combining words like de (of) and el (the) into del when they occur one before the other. It speeds things up.

I don't think they speak any faster then any other other language group. BUT, THEY DO TALK REAL LOUD.

Have you ever gone to a restaurant and listen to Mexicans where there is an open kitchen. It is really disturbing they all talk continuously and loud. I have even complained and even walk out not eating, my complaints are taken serious.

Spanish speakers talk fast because there are fewer words available to convey the same concepts, the phrases are repeated often.

They talk fast because most other languages are more flowing, and the words come out flowing more smoothly. English words aren't as easy flowing, they seem to have to have pauses and breaks.

To me, but that's because Spanish is not my first language. I think if you aren't completely familiar with a language then it is going to appear to fast to keep up with. Just as when you speak English to someone who speaks it as a second language, you generally need to slow down for them.

Always thought they had to use 5 words to equal 1 English word

It seems that way, actually it isn't. I speak Enlgish and Spanish and there's no difference in their "speed". However, for someone who doesn't speak the language is going to sound as fast as hell.
