The Mormon church's official stand is that polygamy is an eternal principle that has been practiced in heaven nonstop for, well, eternity. For his own reasons that we can't hope to understand god in 1890 prohibited the Saints (mormons' name for themselves) from practicing polygamy on earth until further notice.

This of course had nothing to do with the army that President and Congress were sending to dismantle the church and take back Utah after years of Mormon opposition to authority, of which polygamy was the last straw. The church's usual excuse in these cases is that the people of the world are too wicked to be blessed with this celestial practice.

BTW, after the official banning in 1890 the church still conducted plural marriages secretly until 1910, and of course it is still being practiced in heaven. In fact, many believe that it is a requirement to make it to the highest level of heaven, the celestial kingdom.

If one believes what one hears in the media, one would also believe that there are polygamists wanted by the authorities for having multiple wives including girls as young as 13.

This Mormon dude I was in college with explained it thus:

At one point in time, Mormons were persecuted by Christians. The men who survived took the widows and their children into their homes *if* they could afford to provide for more than one family. After Mormons stopped being persecuted, it became a taboo to polygamize again.

There are, admittedly, those who do call themselves Mormon and practice polygamy, but it is not permitted by the church and, as I understand it, any Mormon who practices polygamy today is excommunicated.

The Mormon church is the most politically correct organization I have ever seen. They change their commandments so fast it will make a person dizzy. Polygamy is not popular...so the prophet had a new revelation that it was not to be done any longer. Whew!

Although, I love Mormons themselves. They are such a likeable lot.

An estimated 50,000 still are according to a USA Today report from 2004, though they are supposedly not part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
