Hi Jim,
The local credit union is very unlikely to offer secured credit cards. And I would not trust clicking on random ads on the Web. Those ads cost 15 cents a click and could be fraudulent.

I read some of the other answerers, but I disagree with some of them that say the secured card won't do any good. Holding a card, making purchases with it, and paying it off on time will add significantly to your credit score over time.

I like a site that has rated and reviewed secured credit card companies: http://www.lendersrated.com

I hope htis helps you.

Credit is like a revolving door that constantly turns around and around and around picking up a debt or paying off a debt.
A big chunk of credit like I have is buying a house and two credoit cards that are paid off within two months every time I use them.
My credit score right now is 675.

MAAANNN. You in debt up to your eyeballs. Just kidding. First pay off the money you owe. Don't be cheap. Pay it off. Then go to BankofAmerica (be well dressed please, no jeans nor sneakers). Ask for a branch manager. Tell her/him you are looking to get a secured visa credit card. For 100 down they will get you 500.
Now you got your credit card, plz do not go to the mall. It's for an emergency.

Ummm...why don't you use that $300 to pay off your bills. This way, your credit score goes up and you don't need a credit card.

Why pay them $300 to get what amounts to nothing more than a $300 gift card.

Don't need a secured card mate. Use that money to pay your bills.

You can apply, but they don't HAVE to give you a credit card. But you may want to consider joining a credit union, because once you are a member and can prove you can manage a checking and savings account, they are more likely to offer you a credit card, car loan, mortgage, etc.

Assuming you have no other debt, yes that would help. But if you have anything outstanding, make sure you pay it off before taking out a secured card. You should really start with a clean slate.
