I'm pregnant and hoping for a girl. If we have a girl I want to name her Kirsten. I always thought that Kirsten was pronounced "KEER-sten. But now, some of my friends are saying it is pronounced "KUR-sten." I have never heard Kirsten pronounced that way, and I hate the way it sounds. I much prefer "KEER-sten." Which way is correct?

Both are correct. We spell my daughter's name Mary Kathryn (kath-ryn) but spelling it Katherine or Catherine also leads to the same pronunciation. If you like the name, spell it the way you want to, and people will pronounce it the way that you do, or spell it Kiersten.

What ever you say is correct is correct, but if you spell it Kirsten most Americans are going to mispronounce your daughters name. A few Scots and and the Irish will get it right.

From typical spelling phonetics, it would be a short i, which is closer to a short u than a long e.

Why not spell it Q'rstan? That way no one will try to pronounce it and will ask you how to pronounce it and you can give them the proper vowel sound.

I've always heard it prononced with the long e but I suppose it just depends on where your from or how your family pronounces the name....if you want KEER-sten you could always try altering the spelling a little ( like spelling it Keersten or Kearsten).

To me, it would be pronounced "curse-ton" If you like "keer-sten" try spelling it with an E. Kersten

I think this may be something that changes depending on where you live. In Canada, we would pronounce this cur - sten. I hope this helps you to make your decision and congratulations on this wonderful event.
