I think that what you were on a prretty good schedule with what your were doing maybe when he or she gets a little older you adjust it but not just yet. They still need there sleep to be able to function in the morning.

I have a 9 year old son. He goes to bed every night (even during the summer) at 8:30. He can read for 30 minutes if he wishes to , if not then it is bed time straight away at 8:30.
My five year old goes to bed at 7:30. And my 8 year old goes to bed at 8. I don't care if it is light outside or not. Kids NEED sleep to function and to concentrate on the school work.

Kids of this age need about 10 hours of sleep a night although it varies from person to person. On school nights, figure out what time he needs to get to school and how long it takes to get ready and drive there. Work backwards from there. It's important to set up a routine and to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. This is what I recommend to my students' parents (I teach 4th grade).
From personal experience, when I do this, I don't even need an alarm clock to wake up as I wake up automatically at the same time every morning.

I think that 8:00 is fine. Maybe even 8:30 on school nights. I kind of adjust my kids' bedtime according to how dark it is. (like when the time changes). I hate sending them to bed when it is still light outside.
