I have a five-month-year-old female beagle and I want to know when she will have developed and how often her period will take place. I have always had male dogs and cats, so I am not so experienced.

Dogs do not have periods they have heat cycles. On average a dog will come into it's first heat at the age of 6 months. Most dogs cycle twice a year, however there are dogs that cycle every 3-4 months and still others who cycle only once a year. It is best to get your dog spayed asap so she doesn't come into heat at all. She'll be a lot healthier and happier.

Dogs do not have periods like women do. With a woman, a period is after she has ovulated and the material the body has made to receive a fertilized egg is sloughed off if no fertilization takes place. Dogs go into heat, which means that is their fertile time and they can get pregnant. Most dogs are around 1 year old when they get their first heat. The heat cycle lasts around 3 weeks with about 1 week with her going into heat, about 1 week in heat, and about 1 week going out of heat. Generally dogs have a heat cycle twice a year. Unless you plan to breed your beagle, it would be better to have her spayed before she has her first heat cycle. Spayed females have a decreased chance of developing mammary cancer and eliminates the possibility of developing uterine cancer and ovarian cancer. In addition, female dogs in heat can be quite obnoxious as well as bring out every male dog in the neighborhood and beyond to camp out on your door step setting up quite a raucous in your front yard. Not to mention a dog in heat can be quite messy. You can get little diapers for dogs in heat to wear, but there is an unpleasant odor as well as irritating behaviors such as being nervous and crying constantly.

A beagle should come into heat some time around 6 months, and probably every 6 months thereafter unless you get her spayed which would be much better for her healthwise.

Dear beagle owner, I just want to let you know that I have been breding dogs now for over 40 yrs. your dog will come in heat 2 times a year unless you decide to take her to the vet and get her fixed.if you intend on her having puppies I think it would be in your dogs best interest to get her fixed to prevent unwanted puppies brought into this world. We have enough dogs at the humane society now that don't have homes. And your dog will live a long and happy life even if you get her fixed. A friend and concerned dog breded.

Anal glands don't need to be emptied unless they're causing the dog discomfort. A groomer can emtpy them externally. A vet empties them internally. If your dog is not scooting or paying a lot of attention to the glads you don't need to do anything. Feed your dog a high fibre diet or all a teaspoon full of psyllium husts to her food and the glands will empty themselve when she poops. Any vet that wants to charge $107 just to empty anal glands is a rip off merchant. Most vets will do this, if needed, in the course of a consultation without charging extra or they charge only a nominal amount. ADD: You spell it fiber in the USA I think, we in Aus. spell in fibre.

beagles don't have periods they are called heat cycles and each time she comes in heat which usually lasts 3 weeks she has a higher risk of cancer. if your not wanting puppies have her spayed
very soon, surely you don't want puppies at her young age, shes a puppy herself. so consider these factors and check with your vetanarian to keep your puppy safe and healthy for the rest of her
life.
