i was doing athletics yesterday, and i was trying to get my urdles technique right, but i hit the hurlde with one knee and scraped the other one hard on the ground. this was on an athletics track, so it was hard, sandy, and dirty. i got a big scrape on my knee, but instead of going to first aid i just washed it off in the toilets. last night it began hurting quite badly, so my mum washed it for me, and i t was dirty again this morning, so i washed it again, but it is still very sore to move, and hard to walk, so i limp. should this be happening? what can i do?

It's probably just sore from being badly bruised and scraped. If it's swollen put some ice on it a few times a day, 20 minutes at a time. If it's red and oozing though, go to a doctor because it could be infected and you may require antibiotics.

Yes this should be happening, and is normal after falling and hitting your knee hard. It is probably bruised and will hurt for several days. As far as the scrape goes, watch for white oozing coming from the wound. If this happens it is infected more than likely. Continue to clean the wound, and put an anti-bacterial cream on it such as neosprin.

Ouch!!! That scrape sound painful. First you shouldn't have washed it in the toilets. You need to clean it really good with hydrogen peroxide. It may burn a little but it is cleaning it out. See if there is any rocks or sand still in it. Let it air out for a little while then put neosporin on it before you bandage it up. If it is gaped open use butterfly bandages to pull it together. If it doesn't heal in a few days or oozes out puss or changes color see a M.D.

You probably ought to check with a doctor. but, if that's not possible or feasible.......I've had good luck with an application of sulfa powder on large scrapes. A brand name to look for is "BFI" Powder. That will help mend the scrape. Are you certain you've sustained no mechanical injury to the knee. Lastly, have you thought about infection due to initial first-aid in the toilets? good luck.

I would definitely suggest you have it checked out. After a bad fall like that you could have broken something or given yourself a nasty sprain.Maybe you should be off it for awhile so get it checked soon.
