I am travelling from Malaysia and have never been in US. I am based in Philadelphia for a week and would like to visit New York and Washington DC.

It's pretty easy. Buy a ticket on amtrak.com. You can take the train from Penn station either North to New York or South to Washington DC.

NYC is 90 minutes from Phila.
DC is the other diection.
There are basiically 3 different speed trains and the prices is according.
You might want ot got to NYC for the day (people actually do comute) and then go from Phila to DC for a day or overnight.
NYC is more of a walking City and DC is more of a see the famous sights, - have fun

Look it up on line, if your are going to stay at a hotel they should be able to tell you , write to them or call.

If staying with relative ask them to find out.

Malaysian travel agent can also help.
