It's hard to compare people from such different sports...they both did amazing things for their respective sport. However people were already watching basketball before MJ. Ali made boxing what it is. People started watching boxing just to hopefully watch Ali get his mouth closed for a while which didn't happen too often. Ali made boxing the big money sport it is today. Plus if you say boxing most people will still think of Ali. You say basketball most people will prolly be thinkin about Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, D Wayde, now days...I'd go Ali...

your comparing apples to oranges here
1.individual sport vs. a team sport
2.differnt time periods(knowledge of training technique
3.pysical sport vs.not so physical
they are both the best of their sports but to say who was the better athlete, cant tell,if ali had the supliments and equipmentthat jordan had at his time could he even been greater,,,as for jordan ,your getting younger guys reaching the magnitude he had (Lebron James,,,but your not getting fighters with the caliber that ali had nor the carisma.so ali will always be remembered as the greatest but i think there will be someone to outdo jordan the smae way jordan was called the next wilt chamberlin,,,you never hear anyone say(he could be the next ali)so i say ali is and always will be THE greatest

Ali, the heavyweight champion is the holder of the greatest prize in sport. Always has been and always will be. There is no comparison between an individual sport and team sports. Ali relies on no one. Other sports to be held in high regards super heavy weightlifting, marathon, triathlon iron man, 100m sprint and the list goes on but boxing is the ultimate.

I would have to go with jordan, cause ali wasnt even the greatest heavyweight fighter. Rocky Marciano was the greaest heavyweight fighter. Ali had 5 losses and a big mouth. He said he was the greatest so many times people started believing it.

your question is a difficult one to answer as there are severe differences and not a lot of common ground. however, if you look at this soberly, michael jordan was the most dominant basketball player of his era and, arguably, the greatest basketball player ever! he was seldom, if ever, challenged and often just awed opponents w/his immense talent. he dominated his sport probably more than any one athlete ever has, however, ali dominated his sport, sports in general, and his era and his country and the world and became the single most recognizeable face and name on the planet. he had a mouth but he had that freakish talent to back it up. he didn't just dominate the sport, he re-established it, revolutionized it, validated it, popularized it, etc., and it has still yet to recover from the ripples of his greatness. his greatness transcended his own sport and paved the way for athletes in football, basketball, hockey, baseball, etc. to make multi-million dollar salaries, and his fights were events that defined the times! if ya had to pick one over the other, ali would easily win out over jordan....in fact, one begat the other! does this answer your question?

smitty...I didn't go to the Star Wars school of nerds, what exactly does that mean... sounds insightful...and how does it possibly pertain to either one of these individuals?
The question has to be looked at like this...who was greater in their individual sport? EVERYBODY knows it's hard to compare two athletes from different sports, why is everyone stating the obvious? Must we be so technical? Do we ALL have to be philosophers...
Count this one for Mike.

The winner is riches or what you stand for?
Remember in Stars Wars when Luke was looking for a "great warrior" and Yoda told him a war does not make one great.
