I can't believe I am answering this question the way I am...because in clinic, these dogs are little terrors but for their owners they are little angels.
I would get something like...a Maltese, a Shih Tzu (or Lhasa Apso), a miniture Poodle. They are pretty low key animals and so long as you have a bit of a yard, they are quite happy to run out back to do their business then come back to their owners laps. It might be wise to check out your local SPCA as there are plenty of abandoned dogs (some of the young adults are very well trained) that need a loving home.
Rememer though, there will be vet bills and upkeep costs however if you buy a good quality food in bulk (big bags) it will often last forever with these little guys if you keep it in a sealed container.
And for all those who would deter anyone from getting a pet a 70 years old - shame on you! Sometimes older people have lost everyone near and dear to them and need companionship, and what better companionship than that of an ever faithful best friend! Most elderly people account for their pet in their will to ensure their animal has a good home to go to if the unthinkable should occur.
Good luck and enjoy your little dog.

i suggest a yorkshire terrier, or a maltese, or a shihtzu, its small toybreed type of dogs, not much of a barker, low maintenance except for its grooming and coat, and can stay in the apt the whole day, and very sweet pets, it will care for their masters for a long time, for an old person this would be good, although a chiwawa would be nice because it has no coat, sheds little so if u have asthma or any allergies this is an ideal pet for u, plus u can bring them anywhere u go inside ur bag or crate, because theyre all small, so u dont have to go back to the haus if u r out to give them food. very good companion indeed.

A small dog that will enjoy walks outside but will also be happy lazing at home. I'd pick a quiet breed, one that isn't inclined to be too difficult to care for. Even a golden retriever would be a good choice. Probably not a puppy of any breed though - a dog that is a couple of years old and over the puppy stage might be best. My personal choice would probably be a Maltese. I hope this helps.

My question is how active is active. Like jogging 3 miles a day. Riding a bike or a walk for 2 miles once a day.You don't want a dog that's overly strong and can be happy being a coach potato also. I would suggest a adult rescue dog. A adult dog from a shelter. Go on Pet Finder for your area read about the dogs then go and meet them.

Dog's live about 10 to 15 years, so you might think of a shelter or go on line and find a rescue site for older dogs. My best guess for an older person who is active would be mutt dog. They are great dogs and my aunt got one from the pound and my aunt is 69 yrs young. Her dog is a mutt and a great dog.

An older dog. I would suggest getting one from a shelter who is already house trained and has learned some manners. A young dog will be too much for an older person. There are some great older dogs who need homes in almost every shelter.

i think adopting a dog from the shelter would be a good idea. the dog i have is a pit bull and we rescued hr off the streets she has been a wonderful dog. she does whatever we do. if we are sleeping she is sleeping if we are watching TV she is watching TV. she doesn't like to play much but she loves going on walks and getting out of the house. not that I'm saying you have to get a pit bull but rescue dogs are always the best way to go in my opinion

I think you should ask the recipient what kind of dog she likes. She may have her own preferences as to breed, age, needed exercise, etc. To say that she is a certain way because of her particular age is a bad idea; some 30-year-olds can't handle the exercise that some 70-year-olds *can*!

Try your local shelter and take the seventy year young female with you. Let her decide which one of the homeless dogs she would like to have.

I would suggest a smaller dog with a good personality. Sometimes mixed breeds are best as pets. Why not visit your local pound or ASPCA shelter and see what is available? If you don't have these in your town, then visit a pet shop and see what varieties are available in your area.
