Try a yard sale at the end of the day. People are usually glad to get rid of unpurchased items. Also go to a college campus at the end of the school term. College kids collect more than they can return home with and will be glad to have someone take it off of their hands

depends entirely on where you live, but I'd wager the city dump has a little free stuff hanging around.
