Spanking a child has three immediate effects: pain, fear and anger. This is how you are teaching your child to be. Learning to obey is not what you would really want for your child, is it? Wouldn't they be happier if they learned to understand they have the power to make a difference in how things happen. Relax. Let love for your child be your guide.

Oh heck no. Look what's happened right here with all the spoiled brats hanging out on answers.
I was spanked once or twice. That's all I needed to learn that my folks meant business. I got the message loud and clear. There are examples on both sides of the issue. I agree that each instance should be evaluated carefully. Sometimes just taking privileges away is sufficient. Nevertheless, there is an awful lot of spoiling going on. Parents use the excuse that they have to work so hard and are too tired at the end of the day to do their parenting chores. I say, "Then you shouldn't have had kids!".
'Nuff said?

i grew up being spanked and in turn i use that on my children. But only as a last resort. I think some parents use it to liberally. I only spank my children when they have already been spoken too and warned way too many times. And i think that as your child grows up, it's not appropriate anymore. with older children, their are much worse things you can do to punish them. And also, if a whipping goes past a small handful of pops, then you need to reacess your motives. a child only needs a few pops on the toosh to get their attention, not an all out beating! Their is a difference between getting the childs attention and just being cruel. Always make curtain you're punishing the child for their own benefit and not because you are angry!

We raised five, and when warranted each of them got an occasional spanking. Today all five are well-adjusted, solid responsible adults with good jobs and raising families of their own.
Before any spanking situation my wife and I always made sure that we weren't angry and that the kids new this. Also, the spankings were never beatings but more a means of impressing the child with the seriousness of their transgression rather than just inflicting pain.
Today though--at least in this state--if you spank your youngster you could very well end up having all your kids taken away by the state Childrens' Services Department due to "child abuse."

You're right! I was spanked when I was bad, and I turned out okay. Sometimes it's the only way to get through to a kid. It has to be a lastr resort though! But, it has it's time and place. There is nothing more uncomfortable than watching a child be spanked in public! Also, there is a clear line when it goes from punishment to abuse. A parent should never spank out of anger, and there should never be bruises or marks.

Your basic needs of "Spare the rod, spoil the child" are indeed true to the point that if you take a child that has been taught respect, honesty, kindess, generosity, loving, giving, you have met a child that has had a source of discipline. You can't have discipline with out sometimes enforcement. My daughter has instilled in her small girls that you respect your elders, do as you are told and if you disobey, you will suffer consequences. Each child is different. The oldest of her daughters is effected greatley when she gets a spat...the other child however, has to be disciplined in other ways....such as standing in a corner, etc. But, yes, I do believe in that saying.

My answer was in some cases, but I guess you agree with me. Different circumstances require different actions. I don't believe in hitting a child just because you feel they did wrong. If you are going to spank you MUST give the kid a reason why you did.

I think it's ridiculous. I am 15
My mom is no longer around, and my dad stopped a long time ago. However, we moved to the deep south 2 years ago and people here are so weird about it. They do it in the schools and in almost all families, at least based on what I have seen and heard in my friend's families. The principal and vice principal and a few of my friend's moms are like my dad should do it me and I am like hello I am 15 that's insane. One of my friend's moms is way overboard like since my dad does not discipline me than she should instead. I feel like I am on Mars and now I see why they call it the Bible Belt.

Heck no. It's a very old expression that deems to justify beating children as a way to discipline them. Psychology has since determined with excellent certainty that it's almost always not necessary, and a child will develop in this world much better (i.e. less violent) if you don't beat them.
