One site claims that some quick carbs like sweets (without caffeine or chocolate) Can help you fall asleep faster when you crash from it. I have tried pop tarts and it worked for me. Also a nice warm relaxing shower that helps you to forget things. I used have this problem often. If you lay in bed thinking about a lot of things this can be a problem. I used to try and focus on silence and darkness. Some white noise like a fan can drown out noises.

Benadryl. Take two and sleep like a baby. My doctor says it is safer than sleeping pills and works just as well. I don't fall asleep when I take sleeping pills, but Benadryl put me right out. And I don't feel groggy when I wake up!

Lavender scented candles, incense, soap, shampoo, etc. can be of some help - as can chamomile tea. A warm bath can also be helpful.

Valerian root (available at Walmart, as well as Health Food Stores) can help - as can Sleepytime Extra Tea with Valerian. Melatonin helps with sleep and is also available over-the-counter.

Imagine you are in a beautiful place. Imagine the sights, feelings, smells, people, etc. Just imagine being there and you should fall asleep pretty quickly. Sweet dreams! :)

Read a book for half an hour or so while listenning to soothing music. Or drink a cup of hot tea: That tends to be relaxing too.

Count sheep. Or jump on your bed until you're too tired to do it anymore and fall asleep.

Listen to a boring tape or CD and try to stay awake and concentrate on listening. My favorite is Walden by Henry David Thoreau. Before chapter one I'm snoozing!
