Hi we have a 14m/o and miss having a dog around. I have been doing a lot of research on the subject and know most dogs are great with kids as long as they are socialized with them. We had two (a chihuahua and a pitbull what a pair :) I had a lot of comlications during my pregnancy so my mom took my guys in and now they are all so attached that we decided they should stay over there. My daughter loves to go and see the puppies as often as we can. I always had a dog when I was growing up and want my daughter to experience that also. Just curious about anyones personal experiences on this subject. Thanks to everyone who answers seriously!

We have a 4 year old and a 10 month old..and we have 2 dogs..a German shepard/lab mix and a chocolate lab. Both of them are great with the kids. They have both grown up with our 4 year old, and were no different when we brought our new baby home. I will always recommend labs and German shepards...and I know retrievers are great too for homes with small kids. You can also research all breeds and see which ones would best fit your situation..whether you have small kids, big/small yard, grooming requirements, etc. on Petsmart's website.

We have a 3 legged lab mix that we rescued about 6 years ago. My son is 20 months old and loves her, but I don't leave them alone together. You have to keep in mind that it's an animal and even the most seemingly predictable dog can make a mistake. I think if I were ever to get another dog it would be a golden retriever. They have high marks/are very docile around children.

My famliy just got a Maltipoo (half maltise, half poodle) and she is so sweet. Even the vet and groomer say that she has a wonderful personality. She loves to play, get pet, and she is not yappy and does not make alot of noise. We got her from a realyl good breeder, so if you do get a dog from a breeder, make sure he is a good one, and not one that works with puppy mills. Our dog, Lola, is super cute, and she is a small dog. When we walk her, people alway want to by her (we have been oferd more than 200$!). If other Maltipoos are anything like min,e she will be a great family pet, and bring you lots of love and joy into your life.

we have an old english sheepdog that is almost 7 months old. They are such calm dogs. I swear we have only heard the dog bark like 20 times since we got him 5 months ago, and that is only when he is really excited. We have a 2 and 4 year old and the dog let's them climb all over him and everything. They are very gentle dogs. They are a little expensive but they don't have a mean bone in there body.

We have a Jack Russell/Corgi (from pound) mix and a Rat Terrier (stray). They adore our 1 year old, especially the rat terrier; he lets our daughter just jump all over him, riding, pulling, and whatever she can do. There are so many times when they sneak into bed when she is in bed with me, just to sleep next to her. During the day, they are always following her around or play. She loves them just as much. Whenever she is eating something, she takes a few bites and then alternates giving food to both of them, either hers or their own; you have got to see fat they have gotten. And she just lives to give them hugs and kisses. She has gotten to the point that she is always saying "dog" or "buddy" for both of them.

My husband always grew up with yorkies and labs, and he loves them just as much for kids. We would have a lab or two if we had the room.

I think that beagles are a good breed of dog to have around kids. I have always been told that smaller dogs (like tea cup poodles etc.)aren't even tempered to be around kids. Especially small children. Labs are good dogs. Just be care full with any dog, after all they are still animals. It takes just one time for a dog to bite & really do some damage to a little kid!

I have a parson's terrier (sort of a giant Jack Russell) and he loves kids. I got him at the pound as a pup, which has had few side effects other than his insistence on taking his food to a corner to eat one mouthful at a time. But pound pups in the 15-25 pound range make good "kid-friendly" pets.

We have a German Shepard/lab mix and we had a pit bull/rottie mix our pit/rottie mix just passed away about 2 weeks ago and we still have our german shepard/lab mix. Our pit/rottie was great with our children and they were vey attached to her. As soon as the kids came out of their rooms in the morning she would come running to them and lick them all over!!! She was very protective and trained well. Our german shepard/lab mix is really good with them to. He runs around with my 3 year old son all day and he loves our 1 year old daughter. They are both good with my children it is just a matter of observing the temperament of the dog you choose to get.

ABSOLUTELY NO DOGS WITH LOCKJAW!!!!!!
Pitbulls are not a breed of dog that should be around children of any age. Socialized or not. Larger dogs are less tempermental that smaller breeds of dog. However you also need to take into concideration the temperment of your child when choosing a pet.

I was raised with a german shepard. My kids were raised with a poodle (which I didn't pick). I later got a lab who adored them. Whatever type of dog you get make sure it's a pup and let them grow up together.
