catholic christians is like western easterners...
We believe distinctly different things.
Christians do not believe in the confessional, christians confess and repent to Jesus himself no priest is needed because Jesus is the highpriest.

You don't ask the priest for forgiveness. It is really good of you to ask this and try to end your ignorance. The priest also must go to confession. The same being forgives everyone.
Living in europe, I attended confession with priests who couldn't understand what I was saying. The point is not at all that the priest is going to forgive you. This evolved from much smaller gatherings of Christians, of course. You would be working with your spiritual guide or fellow traveller.
The big thing it is supposed to do is make you humble, make you really reflect on what you've done.
It's about the least offensive part of the major religions.

If you read John 20: 21-23, you will see that jesus gave his disciples the Holy Spirit and the authority to forgive sins or not to forgive sins.
Yes, teh priest is human and he sins also. The priest understand the need for forgiveness and is able to empathize with the person who feels guilty and needs to be be forgiven and welcomed back into the graces of God.
To admit to another person your failings is very difficult, but the weight that is lifted off of ones shoulders when he or she hears words of comfort and forgiveness is incredible.

Well, I am not a Catholic and therefore believe that we can now confess our sins directly to God. When Jesus died, he rose again and now sits on the right hand of God and has become our mediator in heaven - the bible says, there is one mediator between man and God and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. That being said, I don't have a problem with someone confessing to a priest as long as they realize that the priest himself has no saving or forgiving powers but can be an instrument to help you draw closer and get right with God. As long as you remember that Jesus is the key to our forgiveness and salvation, you will be okay.

The Catholic Church believes that "Only God forgives sin."
When a penitent person asks God for forgiveness, his (or her) sins are immediately forgiven.
Catholics also believe that when someone sins they not only hurt their relationship with God, they also injure the entire church, the body of Christ.
The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation with a priest ordained in the name Jesus Christ not only reconciles the sinner to God but with the entire church, including you and me.
A priest, bishop, or pope goes to any other priest or bishop for the sacrament of Reconciliation.
With love in Christ.

The Catholic Priest is a supernatural being endowed with powers direct from God. he can condone actions which mere mortals could not. He is above the law and only aswerable to God. If he forgives a Catholics sin - even if it be murder - you are forgiven; it is as if it never happened.

I am not Catholic; but I heard that the Priests can take each others' confession. It's like a secret society.

He represents our heavenly father on earth. Another priest can perform the sacrament of reconciliation to him.
