It's one of those assumptions that's gotten out of control. The last Catholic wedding I was at was a full Mass with communion and was 40 minutes. No big deal.

If you've grown up Catholic, then the length seems perfectly reasonable to you, but if you grew up not going to church, or going to something like a Baptist church where weddings run about 20 minutes, an hour + long ceremony can seem outrageous. I went to a Catholic wedding once, and I was totally lost as to what was going on and the preist kept going on about the couple would have lots of kids (which is such a sterotype, but I swear, he was!), and we all had to keep sitting down and standing up and kneeling down over and over, that I was worn out by the end of the whole thing.
But the couple were devout Catholic's, and it was their day, and I didn't say a negative word to them. And if you choose to have a full Catholic ceremony, noone that you invite should say anything bad about it.

Dude I have never been to a catholic wedding that wasn't over an hour long and I've been to alot of catholic weddings. Saturday night mass is usually one a half hour long.

For people who didn't grow up in a Catholic family and aren't used to Catholic weddings they do seem extremely long.
I was used to non-Catholic weddings and the ceremony lasting 25 minutes or less. Then my girlfriend's sister got married in a Catholic wedding and it took about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Wait, people you KNOW and LOVE are criticizing the type of wedding ceremony you're having because it's not brief enough and entertaining enough for them?!
That is totally rude! I would be completely offended if I were you.

I think because compared to most other Christian faiths that last about 15-20 minutes, an hour can seem long.

it would be disresepctful for your guest to complain about the length of the ceremony but if you want my advice seat all the catolics to the left and non- catholics to the right, it will make the service go much better for those who actually participating

Because it IS long. Or at least longer than many protestant weddings, which can be over in 20 mins.
