Like 3 or more? Some have as many as 10, 20 or more. What's going on? I don't see this with men. Is this a woman thing? What is the reason for someone to need that many? Often times the cats live in disgusting conditions.

Women are more nurturing than men by nature, so that may explain why a woman would take in several cats.

People(mainly women) with multi-cats don't necessarily feel the NEED to have that many.Often, cats are dropped off at their homes or are manipulated some how (gonna take it to the pound if you don't take it) Once some one knows a "cat person" they tend to take abandoned/stray cats to them.

The alternative to taking a cat in usually ends up with euthanasia. Cat people obviously have a weakness for cats so they decide to keep it or foster it out. It can be overwhelming at times but if one has the time, patience and money to PROPERLY care for them (vet expenses-spay/neuter, cleaning up after them, food, etc) I don't see a problem.

I speak for myself and the other "crazy cat people" I know well.

BTW. Alternating your cat is a must and is the first step I take along with testing for diseases and vaccines.

I have a close girlfriend that has 17 cats and 2 dogs.
The reason she has so many cats is because she started out with like 3 cats, those cats had kittens, and those had kittens etc
She is an animal lover and she just can not stand the idea of someone else taking one of her cats and it being mistreated. Or taking them to the pound for them to be killed if nobody adopts them. She is afraid that if she gives them away and the family has kids that the kids are going to hurt them accidentally.

She makes sure that her animals have food and water before she has food and water.

I know this sounds weird but it is just the way she is.
Her animals are just like kids to her. (she has no children)

And women just have more capacity for love then men do. We take everything to heart also. Including the love for animals.

Because they're approximately the same size and feel of a child. If a woman doesn't have a kid, she wants to care for something. It feels natural. So they look for something that wants to be loved and they can cradle it like a baby. Hey, it's not any weirder than men going around committing most of the violent crimes in the world---so don't judge women for not getting the love they need...especially from men. Men are too self centered to really care about anyone but themselves anyway, so they'd never understand what a maternal instinct is. Women have to deflect these feelings somehow because lord knows there aren't any sane men left out there.

I am not 50 something i have 5 children and I live in the woods! Mice and rats are not fears they are facts of life so I also have 7 cats the run around. They are my rat traps lol! other than that is because a cat you always know where you stand, they are not like other animals, they don't just stay with whom ever feeds them, they have to love you and trust you. They are unconditional friends once they decide to get attached. Trust me they understand when you want some space or are just upset too, its like a 6th sense for them.

Cats make great pets. They're cuddly and quiet. I think women appreciate them more. When a woman is alone, she may feel lonely, and cats help drown out some of the "quiet." I've seen disgusting stories on Animal Planet, too. I guess some of them get so wrapped up in the caretaking role and don't want to admit that they aren't well-equipped to take care of them.

Most women I know who have a lot of cats are using the cats to replace something they lack in their lives. Maybe they are single and alone. Maybe they didn't' have any children or they did but their children don't come around. Women by nature are nurturers. The number of cats is irrelevant--it has to do with the fact that the woman is replacing what they are missing in their life with the cats. It's very sad and unfortunately I fear that is my fate in life as well.

Sometimes a beloved cat has kittens, and the owner can't bear to give them away. Also, many people (myself included) are terrified of mice (and worse things), and would prefer to keep cats around.

I have known men who have lived alone and had more than one kitty as well.
