Feet can swell when excess fluid accumulates in them due to the heart's inability to pump sufficiently. Heart disease is a complication of a large percentage of diabetics, therefore managing your blood sugar is an important way to manage/prevent cardiovascular disease. Of course there are other reasons that feet can swell in a diabetic patient (adverse drug reactions , poor circulation, etc.). It is adviseable to check with your provider to see what the reason could be for you.

You really should have your mom take you to a doctor so the doctor can explain what is going on. Probably edema as being overweight is a big sign. Edema is the buildup of fluids in your body. Gravity alone would make your legs swell. Abnormal buildup of fluid in the ankles, feet, and legs is called peripheral edema. The link I put here is a good thing to read. Or just search adema.
Your mom may be right. Seriously get help for a diet and some exercise. And NO SALT!

I am having the SAME malady right now....in excruciating pain...right flank... it "WAS" renal...now allegedly not. My feet swelled up and i had nothing to fit my feet..got it basically down to just bearable. have been to ER several times...I know that kidneys can do it... i read the other answers and they are quite sound. it is all i can do to comply sit here right now. I have been trying to fond out now for months...i get the bandaid effect..morphine or demerol...often they are just rude and have had the police escort me out..odd huh? Edema could be PAD or i recommend prehaps emailing kidney.org they are immediate and great. i do not have the hotline list with me,...but in conclusion....as i cannot stay n anyway...please find someone ....to refer u to a specialist and at lest rule things out.
Thanks.
