I haven't run for a really long time, but for crew practice, we are required to run. I was doing ok but after about half a mile my stomach hurts like crazy. Why is that?

There are two reasons.

One is that the stress can cause a chemical imbalance that creates bloating.

The other is that when you run your insides get pushed down and outward each time a foot lands, and this causes cramping because your abdominal muscles aren't strong / conditioned enough yet to hold them in well.

So, if you're going too fast for your fitness level it could be the first, but chances are, it's the latter.. more sit-ups and crunches missy! :P

Abdominal cramps are pretty normal when you start running and aren't conditioned yet. It may also help to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water the day before you have to run. Drinking while you run can cause cramping or make you sick, so it's a good idea to do it before you have to excercise.

this is simply dehydration cramps. make sure you are adequately hydrated before the run, but not too much water, and if allowed, carry a small water bottle (don't worry, it wont slow you down ok?

Did you eat or drink water before hand?

It may also just be fatigue from being out of shape and pushing too hard

Maybe you drank some water before you started to run, and so you got cramps.

the muscles in your stomach are not use to running so they tighten up so that they can stretch and get you into the shape you need or want to be in.

Your body isn't digesting oxygen correctly. Once you learn to breath the right way when you run, it will go away. MWAH, all better!
