Great Danes are awesome dogs. I've owned them for over 20 years. They do need to have training (as do all dogs).I show mine in obedience & rally trials (I also have shown in conformation). My older Dane has her CGC and is a certified therapy dog.She also has her rally novice title and almost has her Obedience title. I have a 9 week old Dane puppy too that will enter the breed ring and will also be competeing in obedience & rally when the time comes as well as get his CGC.
I would suggest that you get the book The Great Dane Model Of Nobility by Jill Swedlow. It is a wonderful book from a very experienced Dane person. You will gain some very useful and informative information. Not only that you will get truthful information (Many Great Dane books don't have reliable info especially when it comes to feeding & nutrition)
One big thing to remember is if your Dane is a puppy and under the age of 18 months do NOT ever feed him puppy food.Do NOT feed any food with a protein level over 24%. to do so can cause some very serious growth issues. Also don't give vaccinations all at the same time, make sure to space them out by at least 2 weeks. Try to stay away from foods such as Iams/Eukanuba,Science Diet and others that contaiun corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp or by products..instead go with a good quality food such as Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Premium Edge, Wellness, Natural balance, Blue Buffalo, Solid Gold just to name a few

he will grow fast so a very good diet is a must. I like eukanuba large breed puppy food . he will need to be feed 3 times a day until he is about 5 months old then cut back to twice daily.that tail is a whip and it hurts like the dickens when he hit you with it. move all objects from tables that are in the line of that tail. when he gets it going everything is going to fly every where. start his obedience training now while he is still small enough to handle. he will continue to grow for about two years. the giant breeds are very layed back once they get in the house and lay down they are usually there for the nigh for for several hours. they are great dogs but have a short life span. 10 years if you are lucky. good luck

Never feed a GD puppy puppy food! They grow too fast and it's hard on their joints. There are ton of links for danes..just do a search. My dane is 5 yrs old. He eats 3-4 cups of food twice a day. Never feed one big meal 'cause they are prone to bloat. Hogan is the sweetest most loving dog we have ever had. He lives inside and is very careful walking around things. Hope you have many years loving your new baby!

You got a Dane!!! Omigosh - I love them. I'd love to own one! I would check out the AKC website for more information, uh...you could also get in contact with various breeders, most of them are more than willing to help you with information on your dog. Books on the breed are sometimes very useful - I mean, you don't need a whole library...but they are very informative in terms of the breed's history, what health problems they may have, and what their overall personality is. Wish you luck with your Dane!

When I got a lab, I got the "Idiots guide to Labrador Retrievers" I learned very much from it and still reference it on occasion. Maybe they have one for the Great Dane Breed too?

Make sure you get him checked out by a vet.
Have him neutered unless you are planning on showing seriously in conformation. Start positive reinforcement obedience training while he is young. Feed him a large breed puppy food, I recommend Nutro (:

they are considered GIANTS... feeding them correctly is VERY VERY important.. they require a premium food for LARGE BREED PUPPIES.. this is designed to slow their growth down so you have fewer joint problems.. dont get a food from the grocery store or wal mart - all those foods are crap.. In Canada I would reccomend NUTRAM or ACANA, in the USA I would suggest Welness or Canidae or Innova....
they are short lived because of their size :(
all dogs should go to OBEDIENCE training for proper socialization.. plus you will learn alot more about how he thinks...
neuter at 8-10 months - talk to your vet now
