depends on the trainer

So your puppy gets up after a nap, or eats, you take it outside, it does nothing so you get tired of waiting and bring it in? Is that what I am hearing.

No, you stay outside with it until it goes. Then you praise it for going outside, and I mean you get all excited and really praise it, everytime.

A puppy is a baby thought and will have accidents even though it maybe 2 or 3 days without an accident in the house. They are like kids in that way.

But training goes much better once you train the trainer.

I have had 6 week old puppies at my house, that had maybe one accident in a whole weekend. But that also meant, going outside with them at midnight and playing with them until they were tired, then getting up at 5 am to take them outside before they had a chance to go in the house. And beating them to the punch everytime. After 3 days, as soon as I took them out, they squated to pee and poop almost everytime.

Just like potty training a kid, there is no set time. It depends on several factors,,,
1. how hard and how consistent you work with the puppy
2. the breed of the dog, some are smarter than other
3. best to catch him in the act not after the act
4. even though a puppy may be considered trained, he may still have an accident once in awhile.

It will take several weeks

Do not rub their nose in it. This is an old wives tale, cruel and ineffective

First of all dogs don't remember what they did, even if you catch them a second later after they did something they wont remember they did that. So the best think to do is let him out side not on a leash if you have a fence and dont let him inside until he does his buisness, and if you don't have a fence then walk him until he does his buisness.

Put him on a leash and take him out every 1-2 hours. When he does go out there, take him back to the same spot everytime. As he starts to sniff, follow his lead. It will probley take a week or two to get it down and maybe longer to get the real hang of it. Just keep trying, he will train.

keep him confined to a tile area (like the kitchen) when you can't watch him when he's inside. My male Shih-tzu wasn't fully potty trained until he was about 6 mo. old, and my female tzu (who we litterbox trained) was potty trained by 3 mo. By fully potty trained I mean that's how old they were when I could let them run around and they would let me know when they had to go out and they no longer had accidents in the house.

Keep up the good work. It may also require a slight spanking or two, but remember you're not talking days you're probably talking weeks. Keep trying the love you'll get back will be worth it.
