Well I am considering getting a second dog. I already have a laid back mutt that me and my family love. I am afraid that if I get another dog (it will have the same personality) that my dog will feel like I am trying to replace her. Should I get the other dog? If you think she will feel rejected then what could I do to make her feel better?

If you want another dog as a companion for your current dog, take her with you when you check out the dogs available for adoption at your local shelter. You'll know what ones she likes and dislikes.

Getting another dog can be a very positive thing for your current dog, if you show affection to each equally. Reassure your dog that the new dog isn't getting any more attention.

I don't feel your dog will feel that you're trying to replace her. What you need to do is make sure you spend a lot of time with her when you bring the other dog home - always pet her first, greet her first, feed her first and so on. It'll be hard when you have a new dog, but you have to spend a lot of time with your first dog because she's used to being an only dog and the new dog isn't used to anything in your house yet.

Go for it and enjoy both your dogs!

Go ahead and get another dog. I have 3. It takes a little while for the old dog to get use to the new dog. My dogs even go through a short period when it seemed as if they thought I was replacing them. Soon enough your dog will get over it and will start to bond with the new dog. She/He will be happy that they have a new playmate. We can play with our dogs, but not the same way that other dogs can play.

No, don't worry! Unless your current dog is very territorial, I'm almost certain you can introduce a new dog into the house (as long as temperament is similar and not overly domineering). I've had pairs of dogs for years - as one dies, I bring another in (after the survivor gets to get over the loss of his friend), and it always works out.

Dogs are pack animals, remember, and another DOG will be a dog's very best friend, and THEN comes you.

If you have socialized her with other dogs, like at the park, there shouldn't be a problem. She will probably like having the playmate. If they are both females just make sure they are spayed or you can encounter possible violent dominance battles.

as long as you show both dogs equal affection, apart from jelously nudging you for a stroke your other dog should accept the new one

Introduce the two and if its shaky, keep them separated for a
while and then try to introduce them again and gradually increase
their time together.
