If this is for your home, go with a local company but make sure you get at least three free estimates. If a company wants to charge you to come out and give you an estimate on an alarm system, scratch them off the list. Unless you live in a tightknit community and there are always neighbors around to watch your home, go with a monitored system. READ the fine print on the monitoring agreement very closely as the terms of the monitoring can be up to five years.
Don't sign up for more than one year of monitoring and for heaven's sake DON'T go for the garbage "free" ADT systems. They give you only the basics and always to upsell you on more motion sensors or window screens.
If you are set on going with a national company, go with Brinks. They at least are generally reputable.
Also, be aware that all monitoring contracts automatically renew unless you give 30-days written notice to cancel. This is not a gimmick but actually provides protection to consumers.
My suggestion is to find a local company who will do a nice install and be there over the years as you need service or as your needs change. Good luck.

ADT is fine. Make sure it is monitored. If there is a power outage-make sure it has a back up battery for it to make noise.

Just hold out for extra free stuff. Slaes people will get generous when you say you want to think about it.

We just installed ADT. It is monitored. My favorite feature is the remote that allows me to arm or disarm the alarm from outside.

Monitored for sure. ADT is one of the most trust names in the alarm business.

I always check reviews on the internet for stuff like this.

It is good to hear from users what they think.
