I would go to the doctors as soon as possible. There is a chance it is a break, or it could be a severe sprain. Childrens bones are more pliable, but if she does have a break, it will need to be looked at, possibly x-rayed and splinted properly in order to heal correctly. It may not actually bruise for hours and hours, depending on how much blood is settling in the injury. If she has had ice on it, it will generally not bruise as the cold will be tightening the veins and blood vessels. I am a bit concerned about the pressure feeling; that sounds like her finger may be out of joint and need to be put back in. Mothers are meant to worry, that's part of being a Mom. It may be fine, but you are better off knowing for sure, you do not want your daughter having difficulties with her finger and hand later on. Good luck and have a good night!

Typically a broken bone comes with a very deep purple bruise to it and it should almost be instantanious bruising. I once broke my thumb on a football too, I knew that it was broken instantly. Without seeing it first hand I couldn't tell you if it is broken or not, but if there is no bruise at all, I kinda doubt it. I'd wait a little while and keep the ice on it, take some sort of pain medicine too (don't want to suggest anything for allergy sake). If the swelling doesn't go down by tomorrow you might want to make a trip to the ER. Since there is no bruising, there may not broken bone.

It does sound like it was sprained or 'jammed'. Having done the same thing myself when I was younger, I know it is really painful, but might not be broken. I don't think anyone on here is really qualified to make decisions for your daughter. I would consult a Doctor, but try to avoid going to the ER as they are outrageously expensive. And no, you are not being a worrisome mother, its a natural reaction to have concern for the well being of your children, unless you continue to do so into their late 20's ;-)

Take her to the doctor.
The same thing happened to me, but it was my ring finger on my left hand. Just like everyone else I thought it was no big deal, just tape the finger to the next and be done with it. I decided to go to the doctor just in case and an x-ray showed that my finger was broken at both the top and middle knuckle. I ended up having to have surgery and pins placed in my finger to hold it all in place until it healed.
I'm not trying to scare you, and I'm sorry if I did. I doubt it's as bad as mine was though, unless your husband was throwing it really hard. Regardless, you should at least take her to have it checked out. Just because a finger doesn't mean it's not serious.

If she can bend it, it probably isn't broken. She probably has a sprain. You can either make your own splint with a solid piece of wood like a Popsicle stick or go to your local pharmacy and just buy one. You should go ahead and splint it tonight so she can't do any additional damage to it while she sleeps or during this evening and tomorrow. If she still can't move it normally by Monday or it is still that swollen by then, take her to see your Dr. Depending on her age you can give her aspirin or motrin for her pain and a big dish of ice cream also usually does the trick. Good luck Mom!

I could still move my finger when it was broken (and it was swollen and bruised for over a week)
it's not a serious injury, but take her to the dr if you think it needs a cast/splint
her finger may be crooked from now on, but it gives character

could have jammed it. usually if it is broken it can not be moved at all. however depending an her age, the younger children's bones are still flexable and a broken bone does not act like it would in an adult. probably need to go get it looked at just in case.

Don't screw with homemade splints - if the finger IS broken, you could set it poorly and it may never bend correctly or without pain. Take her to the ER and have it X-Ray'd.
