It is the same reasoning behind an amusement park ride when they tell you to lean your head back against the pad. With your seat upright you are in the best position to absorb turbulence and or a hard landing..

In that position, just as in your car, you are less likely to submarine under the seatbelt which is holding you in against the deceleration forces as the plane lands.

For the same reason they tell you " IT WILL NOT HAPPEN BUT IN CASE WE HAVE TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING OVER WATER!!!" They are required to give these statements.
