Yes it most certainly does. Plus it takes plastic forever to decompose. The success of bottled water has always amazed me.

It's up to the recycler or the non recycler to make it be a contributing factor or not now. We might as well use up the plastic again that's already around =)

If they are put in the trash where they belong they wouldn't be a
problem. I sometimes see trash along the hiways, but no more
water bottles than anything else. I don't actually remember ever
seeing a water bottle.
