Australia is a MASSIVE place, and unfortunately you dont have much of a chance of getting to the reef from Surfers Paradise in one day because it's still over 1000km's between the southern tip of the reef and Surfers Paradise. Basically a day trip from Surfers Paradise is impossible.

Your best place to access the reef, in terms of ease of getting there, would be the city of Cairns. From Surfers Paradise/Gold Coast, the easiest way of getting there is by air. Try:

OR

For some reasonably priced fares.

If you dont want to fly up from Surfers, but still want to take a good day trip from there to something else, think about taking a trip to Stradbroke Island. It's easily reached from there, and is an large sand island covered in pristine forests, with great swimming places, hiking trails and camping. Im pretty sure day trips run out there as well. It isnt the reef, but it's still very good.

There would be a way to the reef from Surfers Paradise, but I think it would be an overnight tour because of the distance.

Your hotel/resort would have a tours desk, ask them.
