are pitbulls ok to have around children?

Curse the deed NOT the breed! Any dog can be a danger to have around if that dog has been mistreated or taught to be mean. My daughter has 2 pitbulls ages 1 yr and 12 weeks. These 2 dogs love everyone, play well with children and get along well with my dogs. They have both been raised with love and kindness and give love in return. Condemning a pitbull because of the undeserved reputation is no different than condemning a race/belief of people because of what some people of that race /belief do. Also, since children have a tendency to pull on dog ears, hair, etc. the children must be taught to respect and care about the animal and it's feelings.

ABSOLUTELY! If you do some research they are technically 3 different yet similar dogs that can be classified as a "pitbull" with the American Staffordshire Terrier being one of them, they are rated #1 for their temperament around children, and are also often used as therapy dogs. I could go on and on, but let me leave you with this thought, ANY dog can become mean, ALL dogs should be supervised when around younger children, and as far as temperament goes on a list of temperament for 100 of the most popular dogs, with 1 being the worst and 100 being the best, Pitbulls ranked 4Th. FROM THE BOTTOM! Labs, Cocker Spaniels, Chihuahuas, Dalmatians, even Golden Retrievers have a worse temperament. Pitbulls are people pleasers, although some can be somewhat animal aggressive, they are NOT any more people aggressive than any other dog, in fact they are less than almost every dog! If you want a fun, and loving companion that will steal your heart and also protect your house, family, and ESPECIALLY your children, I would get a pitbull!

I raised four children around my pitty girl BUT I also trained her from a pup, knew her temperament to a "T" and never left her (or any dog) unsupervised with young children. Even the sweetest, most docile dog can react aggressively if tormented or hurt by a child. Petey from the Little Rascals was a pitbull breed. Not ALL pitbull types are aggressive but do you research and pick a pup with a laid back personality and no signs of overt aggression.

I got my pit when she was 1 1/2 years old, and she is the sweetest dog ever! A lot of people have opinions about pit bulls, but really don't know anything about them.... there's a lot of info on them all over the Internet... like did you know that almost 80% of reported pit bull attacks are NOT even Pit bulls! People don't know how to identify a dog properly, and automatically these wonderful dogs get this awful reputation, for no reason. To answer your question, pit bulls are fine to have around children if they were trained well, just like any dog.... you could train a pug to be vicious if you wanted to.

Aaahhh! It makes me so angry to hear people say bad things about pits! I did research on pits for months before I got mine, and most of you with negative opinions have no idea what you're talking about!

Yes, Pitbulls can be very gentle around children. It all depends on how they are raised. Raise it harshly, and the dog will become rougher/meaner.

Any dog can turn on his master. I have a pit bull and a poodle. The poodle has bitten my brother in the face because he annoyed her and my pitbull ( I have had many pit bulls before and they have never bit anyone. ) has never bitten a single human .

Of course. Pittbulls are like any other dog it is all how you raise them. I have owned 2 Pitts and my uncle has 5 and they are great with my daughter. My daughter also has a Pitt at her daycare. They are accually very protective of childern if they are raised with them. The only dogs my daughter has almost or has been bitten by are little ankle bitters. She was bit by a toy poddle. and almost bitten by a Pekenis (I don't know how you spell it)

Pit bulls have gotten such a bad rap. They become mean and vicious due to the owner. I love pits and if you treat them just like any other dog....they are the best. Get it young so it can grow up with your children.

yes, Pitts are great dogs and are OK to have around kids as long as their trained correctly. My brother had a Lab/Pitt cross and he was great around my brothers 3 small children (and the dog was there first)

I agree with Emily. Pits have a high prey drive and a small child running around can trigger that. If trained from the beginning as a puppy with consistency, I don't see why it would be a problem. I work at a shelter and have seen many Pits that we could not adopt to families with children. Of course, we also had a bait dog (Pit) that had no ears that went on to be a therapy dog. I also think it has partly to do with genetics (mother and father, how much "fight" was bred into the line, etc.)
