As everyone else has stated, you have to be at that weight to sufficiently produce enough blood to make donation worthwhile.
Additionally - you also need to have a high iron count at the time of donation. Eat a good meal before going to the blood bank. Get lots of iron in - think red meat. If you don't meet the minimum requirement for iron at the time of donation you'll be turned away.

It's the target weight for giving blood. If you weigh less, the loss of a pint of blood could be detrimental to you in some way, causing you to feel faint, dizzy or even pass out. The body does replace the blood rather quickly, but the techs don't want to risk a person's health by taking blood from someone weighing less than 110 lbs. That's one of the reasons why small kids can't give blood.

There has to be a minimum. For a person that weighs 110 pounds to give a pint is like me giving almost 2 pints.
If you weigh 110 exactly just eat a big meal and drink a good deal of water before you go in. You'll be good.

More than likely if an adult weighs less than 110 pounds, he or she is not in the greatest of health. There may be an exception where children can donate blood - but only to a family member, etc.

its not a good idea to weight that much while giving blood hun. the reason is because they take a pink which the equvilant to what you drink in elementary school with lunch. it is alot and if they take all that in one sitting which they do you can faint and passout.. you need to be a little more like 115-120. that way you recover faster

Have you seen those Vampire movies where the vampire sucks blood from a person?
That's how you'll look like if they take a pint of blood from you.

So they can make sure after you give blood that your body can make it fast and not suffer from the loss of blood.

Because they have determined at that weight you don't have the volume of bodily fluid to take a whole pint.
You could feel faint. They just don't want to take the chance.
