spirus40- the bump-set-spike thing is called "pepper".
First off, you have to be eligible. Just do what your coaches tell you and you'll go pretty far. If you're not sure on what to do then ask for help--they WILL help you out. Jr. High volleyball is mostly social...it doesn't get super-competitive until high school.

I played in high school and pretty much the only requirment to try out was a 2.5 GPA. It helps to have hand-eye cordination since that's mainly what volleyball is and if you're tall and playing in the front just remember to get your feet off the ground...the higher you jump the better your chances of blocking the ball are (obviously).

I used to play a good volley when I was younger... about 13 or 14 years old... I don't know if you have already heard about Ana Moser, a very famous Brazilian volleyball player... well, I used to learn how to play a good volley at her volleyball school at that time... here in Brazil, of course!

My daughter is about your age. We play a game called bump, set and spike all the time and her skills have dramatically improved over the past year. Serve the ball to your partner about 10 ft away. They bump, you set and they spike. You then bump and continue until the ball drops. I would also work on your standing jump by jumping rope or something similar. One thing I noticed at the league she played in was the number of points lost by not getting the serve in play. I would pace off the approximate distance and work on getting the ball to the opposing teams back line of players consistently. You need to work on these fundamental skills all the time.

Hey don't worry. I didn't make my 6th or 7th grade volleyball team. But I didn't give up, I tried really hard and made my 8th grade volleybal team. So if you don't make it, don't give up.
