I want to lighten up my hair and I'm not sure what to do. Which is more common? My hair is dirty blonde and just below my shoulder.

I use to have my threw the cap until i tired foil i love it ... It doesnt make your hair fall out as bad and looks more natural to me... you can also have the streaks chunky if you like that with foil.
or just natural looking.. go with foil..you will love it

Foil b/c of how long your hair is. Cap is more commonly used for short haired ppl. You can use the cap, but I wouldn't suggest it. Foil also gives you more of an option of where to put the color. For example, a cap does a random pick and may give you too much blonde in one space where foil you can decide if you need more or less blonde in the space. Hope that is clear enough for you. Just below your shoulder? Definately foil. More control of the color pattern you want. So much more in style! You can have chunky highlights, or not so chunky..whatever you want. You can use 2 or 3 colors, also. Yes, Foil!!!
I am a hairstylist and I always use foil, unless the hair is really short, then I use a cap.

If you have thick hair the cap highlights will "get lost" once it mixes with the rest of your hair. I like foils better you just need to get a lot more of them if you have thick hair. Pay the extra money and go to a salon not just a cheap place, and find a confident stylist that knows their stuff.

Go to a professional. Most hairdressers use foil. Caps are old school.

Majority of hair colors out there have a prime or highlight effect. I do not think any of these are necessary if you have the same shade on all of your hair. If you want bold highlights though, I suggest foil.
