What I think your friend is talking about is a bone marrow transplant. This is not an operation in the sense that you get cut open, it is more like a large injection. This new marrow from a donor produces healthy white blood cells that gradually replace the cancerous ones. In some instances leukemia can also be cured with a combination of chemo therapy and radiation treatment.

Leukemia is a blood cancer. She may have had cancer in an organ or body part that could've been removed. She could've had a bone marrow transplant to stop her body from making diseased blood cells, but as far as I know, chemotherapy or radiation therapy are the only ways to treat leukemia. And even then, it's not a guaranteed cure.

Sometimes a bone marrow transplant will get rid of it.
