There you go, that is the best policy yet.

People get into the habit of putting other people down because they feel bad about themselves and it helps them feel better about themselves when they are degrading or pointing out some one else's flaws. Some people develop the habit from family or friends, some are just jealous. Ignore it and be as nice as possible unless they cross the line.

Stallion, in physiology the termed used to describe the above mentioned situation is scapegoating.

The psychoanalytic theory holds that unwanted thoughts and feelings can be unconsciously projected onto another who becomes a scapegoat for one's own problems. This concept can be extended to projection by groups. In this case the chosen individual, or group, becomes the scapegoat for the group's problems.

Also, the word scapegoating is a term utilized by social scientists and by politicians. Scapegoating is an important tool of propaganda; for example, the Jews were singled out in Nazi propaganda as the source of Germany's economic woes and political collapse. Scapegoating is often more devastating when applied to a minority group as they are inherently less able to defend themselves. A tactic often employed is to characterize an entire group of individuals according to the unethical or immoral conduct of a small number of individuals belonging to that group, also known as guilt by association. "Scapegoated" groups throughout history have included almost every imaginable group of people: adherents of different religion, people of different race or nation or political belief, people differing in behaviour of majority. However, scapegoating may also be applied to organizations, such as governments, corporations, or various political groups. In industrialized societies, scapegoating of traditional minority groups is increasingly frowned upon. In the extreme, this may result in socially-enforced rules regarding speech, as in political correctness.

I admire your philosophy. It is a great way to live your life. Some people think they are making a joke, others just don't care if they hurt someone they can't see. Too bad. This is a great forum for people who need real help.

I think often times the people that put other people down are having issues of their own, and can help themselves temporarily feel better by putting others down.

I agree with you about not saying anything at all if you don't have anything positive to say.

There are 101 reasons my friend... it’s the way of the world!!

While they are putting you down: it takes their mind away from their own inadequacies & shortcomings… helps them feel big: important: superior: when in fact they are probably very scared, and lonely people themselves!!

For some in hurting your ‘feelings’… they lessen the feeling of hurt for themselves: or they take pleasure in the fact someone else is hurting to… makes them feel less alone!!

Sad world!!

God bless.

So by not saying nothing, you are saying something. Why do you say non-nice things about people. Hypocrite. =] Just kidding. Humans are naturally narcissistic and enjoy seing others get hurt to boost their own morale.

oh boooooo everyone says mean things about other people. it doesn't make them insecure or crazy its part of dealing with people!!! and as far as "if you can't say nothing nice don't say nothing at all" that's something you tell two year olds so they don't blurt out the first thing that pops on their mind. am i saying go around and tell people off NO! but you can't go your whole life thinking everyone likes you and life is perfect it doesn't happen its what you do with what is said that counts!

People are different... if we were all nice and had all the same values we would be walking around like robots.
Hopefully you can see past peoples mistakes and get over it.. if not, then you just arent a strong person.

I too live by that and not to say anything out of anger that can't be taken back.
I'm sorry that people have put you down but just know there is something that they are jealous of or they wouldn't be bad mouthing you!
