My nutered, declawed, indoor purebred cat will not stay in side. He waits for the door to open and if given even a slight chance he takes off running. Yesterday I chased his little but for 30 minutes trying to catch him, and he wouldnt give up.

When I did catch him he was so out of breath I thought I would have to take him to the vet, luckily he calmed down.

He has a girlfriend whom stays on our porch all night, and when he got outside he was running towards her owners house. Even though hes fixed, can they still get the urge?

OMG what do I do, im getting so anoyed, and out of breath chasing this lil booger.

We have 2 kids 4 and 7 so its impossible to be 100 percent careful and never give the cat a chance to get free.

First off, chasing him will definitely make him want to run away. Never chase! I suggest what I call a "saunter". Nonchalantly and coyly just mosey over to the general direction of the cat. Even sitting down in the vicinity can work. Just chill out with the cat outside, and let it get comfortable - just watch for your opportunity to get a hand on him and gently grab him when you can! Amazingly, if your cat knows you won't chase him, he won't run after learning the lesson.

As far as him wanting to go outside- that's pretty normal. Every cat on earth prefers not to be stuck inside all day. It sounds like he just needs more excercise. You could hold him and walk about outside, allowing him to look around and sniff things. Just waltz around your yard or whatever for a few minutes a day, and his curiosity might eventually wane away, but this can make the problem worse with some cats. Also, get him a little planter or pot with some grass that he can chew on. That helps, and is really healthy for them too. Good luck!

Even when neutered, he can still show interest in a fertile female, though of course, he can't act on it. I have a male and a female. Both are "fixed", but before my female was spayed, she went into heat. My male was already neutered, but he would still get on top of her, and hold her down by the scruff. When she stuck her little tush in the air, he would use his back leg to push it back down! LOL! He is an inside cat, but will use every opportunity to try to sneak out the door! Not for other cats, but because he wants to hunt birds and moles. I have a harness for him, and on pretty days, and to reward his good behavior, I put him out on the leash. If you do this though, always stay outside with him for the entire time and make sure there are no obstacles that he can get tangled with or jump over and strangle himself. My cat loves to go out on his leash and just lay in the grass or chase bugs. This seems to calm his urge to run out the door every time it is opened! (at least temporarily). Also, don't chase! I learned that the hard way. There is a bigger chance of him running off or getting injured if you chase him. If you just wait, he'll come back. The only way mine will come, if he escapes, if by shaking his cat food bag. He has never answered to kitty-kitty. This doesn't get him back in the house, but it at least lets me know he's close by and ok. He will only come back in or let me pick him up when he's good and tired, and good and ready.

A cat as the one you describe is a descendant of the wild cats! It is in-bred for them to want to go out and explore. If you insist on keeping it indoors all the time you are taking away it's natural instincts.......... to hunt, to chase, to just have fun and be curious!!

You had your cat de-clawed?? What is the point of having a cat if you are going to destroy everything about it? Sorry but I think that is just cruel!

If you wanted an indoor pet maybe you should get a goldfish or a hamster!!

If it's going to be an indoor cat, do no longer even enable it outdoors or it is going to easily attempt to flee each time you open the door! Cats are organic predators and are meant to be outdoors for my section. I certainly have a cat that is going out in the process the artwork day and then sleeps on my mattress at night. it truly is not like he's disadvantaged of the abode! He has meals and water interior and that i will enable him in once I get abode if he needs. concerning to the predators, I stay next to a wood with coyotes. it truly is why I basically enable him in at night, that way its extra risk-free, and by using the day i dont concern that plenty. i attempted a cat leash and my cat hated it!

If you wouldn't mind having another cat inside I think I would get him a female companion . It is just instictive for them to try and mate whether they can actually breed or not. I don't know if he can even actually "do" anything with her or not since he has been neutered. But it's just normal for him to still want to try. It is a trigger in the brain not the balls..lol

I would also suggest taking him outside on a leash for walks everyday. He is an animal. and animals were made to be outdoors. It just isn't good for anything, human or animal, to be kept inside all the time. Could you imagine being kept inside your home all day long just being able to look out at the world but never being able to go out into it. I'm sure he is just very frustrated from being cooped up all the time and being alone.Perhaps you could even invite his little girlfriend inside from time to time. :)

you always want what you can't have - cats are the same as human beings (ever see CATS?). Sure he wants to hang with his kitty friend... but if you didn't make such a big deal about it, he wouldn't play the game... and that may be all it is... a little cat and mouse game only you're the cat... does that make sense?

Sooo maybe just let him out a little bit at a time and don't freak out. He knows he dosn't have any claws, he's not going to get himself into any situation he can't handle.

Well the cat's instinct is to be outside. My cats are also indoors and one of mine would love to go outside as well. I always have to open my door cautiously and block him from gettng out. I haven't had to chase him down yet in the 5 years I've had him. I think it helps that I got him a companion to play with when I'm not home.

If you get another cat, get one that is a kitten - adult cats adjust easier to a new cat if they are kittens and not adults.

No, they can't get the urge anymore, tha is what neutering is all about. have to be more careful so he don't run out on you. We won't let ours out on their own either, we hold them by the door and if we are going to be out on a real nice day, we get ours, and their lawn chairs out, yes, you read right. Theirs is a recliner folded up with a towel on it and they have their collars on and a long leash, non metal, when they go out with us and they know they cannot get down and run around. They just relax and take all the nice weather in and are satisfied. Train your cat to know what that collar and leash means and can't go out without them. Never go inside and leave the cat out even with a leash, trust me, it will find a way to take off. Good Luck. I would kep a collar with a phone number and name on it just in case it takes off and gets lost, someone finds it and returns it to you.

Sounds like he's kinda lonely. Maybe you can set up a little "play group" with the neighbor's cat to see if they would like to spend some time together.

cats love the outdoors because they are naturally born as hunters. cats like to chase lizards, birds, snakes, & etc. Your cat probably just wants to go outside and be around what he naturally wants.
