SdKfz is the abbreviation for the German words "SonderKommandFahrzeug" or "SonderKraftfahrzeug"
A "Fahrzeug" is (literally) a "driving thing", or a car/vehicle.
"Kommand" is pretty much the same as in English -- Command.
"Kraft" means powered.
Sonder means special: so the SdKfz designation indicated a special command vehicle or a special powered vehicle.
In the German Army, not every vehicle had radio communications -- that was reserved for command vehicles.

Sd.kfz stands for Sonderkraftfahrzeug or Special purpose vehicle. its an abbreviation which followed the vehicle identification number. For Instance Sd.kfz 251 was an armored personel carrier. In fact there were over 20 different variants of the 251 each starting with the designation Sd.kfz. its an identification designation.

SdKfz designations were assigned to armored vehicles and other vehicles put in military service for a specific purpose. The system was used by Germany prior to and throughout World War II.
