I've often wondered why an omnipotent, omniscient God would need to create beings who could love/worship him. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

The premise that deliberate creation entails the lack of needs or wants is false. By definition, perfection means complete. A perfect being would be a being that does not need anymore more than he already has. If God needed something, then he would not be perfect. God is perfect, so he is does not need anything.
Perfection does not imply lack of want. Want is that which in excess to need as the bonus questions were on the test. If God is perfect, then he already has all he needs to be prefect. If he wants more than what he already has to be perfect, he is still perfect.
In grade school, a perfect score on a test was 100. Sometimes, teachers would put bonus questions on the test. I would take the test knowing I made a 100, but would answer the bonus questions anyways. I didn't need the bonus questions to make a perfect score, but I answered them anyways because I wanted to. I maintained a perfect score and my want to answer the bonus questions.
Similarly, god did not create the universe because he needed to, but because he wanted to. Creating the universe was in excess to his perfection, not to complete his perfection. Thus God created the universe and maintains his perfection at the same time.

What God has created we human beings are slowly finding it out. What was not known about science is very clear now. We are still unable to fathom how big is the universe and how many galaxies are there in the universe. So in order to understand whether God is perfect, first we must unravel all his mysteries and then only we will know whether he is perfect. What we know now is just a drop of that huge ocean.

He did deliberately create the universe we exist in.
To say perfection lacks is too limiting of God. Just as we have a desire to create: Art, buildings, music, etc. you could not stop a musician from playing music unless you killed him/her. An artist would have to have their palette removed to keep them from painting what is in their imagination. Yes, God has an imagination and it is perfect. We can't fathom his perfection or holiness. Maybe since we're always discussing science and religion as it relates to creation, because God is alive, we need to apply the scientific theory: He ingests worship and excretes creation.

God is perfect.
Do not be afraid to let your anger, frustration and emotions surface. God can take our unhappiness.
David, the man after God's own heart, spent many of the psalms praising Him, also spend the other times on crying out loud to God asking "Where are you when I need you?" And this did not alienate David from God. God loved Him. God cares about our anger and desperation.
As we time to time hold a lot of things against God, it is beneficial for us to pray that He would help us to see things from His perspective. God is willing and able to help us through our problems. Do not hesitate that you can put your trust in God in every area in your life.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,_____,
And lean not on your own understanding,
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.
Proverbs 3: 5-6
He is perfect indeed, and He is on our side.
Romans 12:2

God is perfect. He sent his only son to die on the cross for me, you, and others just like us. He did create the world. God is the only type of perfection there will ever be.

Perfect doesn't work. Therefore a perfect god is impossible, just like a perfect tuna sandwich is impossible. I hate tuna therefore it can't be good for me, while someone else might like it. We are too different to have a common concept of perfect.

Go Mojo! Witness in your own little crazy kind of way. Your previous atheist friends just don't understand. I mean, as you are trying to say, we don't even understand everything in this world, how can we possibly try to explain what happened before with science or man's simple little opinion based on his own agenda and facts. How cool is it that you point out how man engages in activities and then try to equate that to God. yes Mojo, I agree with you, we should not try to compare ourselves to the Lord in thinking what we do things for is also what He would do them for. That IS ridiculous. Anyhow, great job in your quest to bring others to the Lord even with your secret messages you have hidden in what you type!

***God is perfect.? ***
No, here is how Jesus says to reach perfection.
Matthew 19:21
Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
Yes the Lord needs.
Mark 11:3
If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing this?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.' "
