First of all, any dog, no matter breed, size, or gender is only as good or as bad as its master. It's imperative that you thoroughly research the breeder you are purchasing from to make certain their GSD's are of sound temperament and receive proper socialization. Before bringing any puppy home you will need to educate your children on what is acceptable behavior with a puppy and what is not. Once you have integrated a new puppy or dog into your family it is always wise to use caution when children's friends are over. Never leave them unsupervised as other children may not have been taught "puppy" manners.

My german shepherd is a big sweety, and she loves children-but not other dogs on leashes. It could depend on where you get one. If you get one as a puppy, and raise it right, you'll have a wonderful dog. If you get one from a shelter, make sure it has a good temperment, or you might get a mean one.

It would be good to know the dogs parents temperment.
My son learned to walk holding onto my shepherds long coat, There never was a moment that my German shepherd gave us a worry.

I was raised w/a GS, name Thunder and he was a charmer. My true belief is any dog can be made to be mean (chows exception to my experience) and a loved & understood dog and that includes rot's,pits, dobies, etc. It's the people that put meaness in dogs by chains, cages or taught to be agressive - it's not the dogs fault. If they've been prior abuse, lots of love and tenderness can change them, I know because I have a dog that took a yr. to look into my eyes & she still runs from brooms, etc. But you wouldnt believe it now & nobody else does when they hear her almost unbelievable abusive past.

it all depends on the way they are raised, you have to socialize the dog, because honestly any dog can be mean, you have to start teaching and training the dog from day one, i have had gsd in the past and they were babies, i have a 5 mth old now and she loves my kids very playful, but you have to take the time to train them, and socialize them, if you dont have the time to do that, then i would reconsider getting one

No, however, due to inbreeding some German Shepherds have become unpredictable. This is true of so many 'pure breed' dogs.

The GSD needs to be socialized correctly just as any dog has to be. If not raised with a firm but fair leader (YOU) any dog can be aggressive and dominate
