Comb the hair well. Take a ponytail of hair about a half-inch thick near the crown of the head. Take ponytails of hair the same size from close to the temples on each side of the head. Use these 3 pieces to start the braid. As you braid down the back of the head,
pick up additional ponytails of hair about the same size from near the ears and then from around the neck. Incorporate them into the braid, which is never more than 3 small ponytails, no more than a half inch thick each. Try to keep the ponytails the same thickness, this is the hard part! When you get below the nape of the neck, just finish the braid like a regular braid and fasten with a ponytail holder.

I don't know what a fish plait is though!

French one is pretty easy. I cannot do a fish one. Search french braid or herringbone braid and you may have more luck. In current U.S. language, we use the term braid. Good luck and have fun.

French braid starts with three pieces just like a regular braid. Braid all three one time. Grab a little bit of hair on one side, add to that side that is free and you are going to braid next. Braid the new larger section. Then go to the opposite side and grab more and add. Do this all the way down to the place where you will put a fastener. Start with a messy one and then get neater. Hair that is two days dirty works a lot better than clean. You can also use a comb to part each section you add. This looks a little to neat for me (that or I just am not neat enough).

I found a video at the local public library about how to do many types of French plaits or braids. Start there.

This site has good instructions on french braiding your own hair.

It also has herringbone on someone else's hair. That seems to be the same as the fish tail.
