According the the American Kennel Club a breed standard A word picture describing how the perfect dog of a breed should look, move, and behave. The breed standard is owned by the parent club, with full use extended to the AKC

If you didn't have the breed standards, there woul be no way of distinguishing one breed from another. All dogs would have the same characteristics.

The breed standard contains a narrative description of the breed and a long, often highly-detailed list of conformation points, any deviation from which is considered a fault and results in penalties against the individual animal. Some breed standards specify the percentages or number of points to be awarded for each characteristic, the total of which equals the dog’s overall score.

a prime example of this is at the famous dog show Westminster

The breed standard is there for judging in pet shows, and to help you when you pick out a puppy - if you see the parents and they look correct for the breed, you'll have more confidence that the puppy you are bringing home will be representative of the breed.

As for showing your pet, the breed standard is the be-all and end-all. You can have the best dog in the world living in your house, but if it doesn't meet the breed standard, it won't win shows. I have a fabulous, absolutely beautiful, sweet chessie, and his tail is about two inches too short and he is about ten pounds heavier than the standard max for a male chessie. I love him just as much as if he was perfect by the book, but he won't win anything in show because he is not. If you're not showing your dog, the standard shouldn't matter. If you are showing him, the standard is no different than the standards used for judging beauty pageants.

Having pretty outsides doesn't guarantee pretty insides in dogs any better than it does in humans.

Donna know- I have prefomance dogs - and personally I think it more important that a dog can see that if its eyes are blue. If it can pass a everloving JC run (half the dogs including WHIPPETS at our clubs last AKC trial couldn't) than if it has enough shoulder layback.
THat being said it is rather nice to be able to identify the dog's breed on sight.
The DQ's in whippets are ALL politically motivated.
